A+X #12 Review by (November 16, 2020)

Review: The Beast/Wonder Man tale is a nice little humorous vignette wherein they get to have some fun and take us along for the ride. The Cap/Jubilee story is equally comic though the situation would seem to be more dire (c’mon, Nazi vampires?); it ends up as an AFTERSCHOOL SPECIAL (Cap calls it that, despite not knowing what that is) to give a nice self-esteem talk to the young mutant about how we are defined by our choices. Nice.

Comments: Jubilee became a vampire in X-MEN (2010 series) #10; this has since been reversed, in GENERATION X #86 with her powers also being restored. And ABC AFTERSCHOOL SPECIAL (1972-1997) was a television series aired in late afternoons addressing controversial issues facing teens and children, often with a moral lesson attached.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

A+X #12 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On a visit to Avengers Mansion, Beast meets Wonder Man and they reminisce about the old days when they went out drinking together and each wonders why the other changed. After a few drinks in a bar they decide to recreate those happier times. They battle the Circus of Crime. Beast takes on Pink Pearl in the wrestling ring. They shave half of a sleeping Wolverine’s head then escape when he wakes up. They encounter a violent Absorbing Man and recognize there’s something wrong with him so they invite him to a bar where he talks about his marital problems. They have him reconcile with Titania and try to make time with her pals Letha and Poundcakes and barely escape. And at the end of the night, they are satisfied.

“Captain America + Jubilee”
Writer: Justin Jordan. Art: Angel Unzueta. Colors: Thomas Mason.

Captain America takes Jubilee on a mission to investigate a Nazi sub sunken off the Louisiana coast during the War and only recently rediscovered. They dive down and enter, encountering a band of Nazi vampires; they keep up some comical banter while killing off all of the vampires. After it is over, Jubilee asks Cap why he brought her along, since he could have taken care of them himself. Cap replies that he wanted the undead Nazis to see that, like her, they could choose not to be monsters.
