Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes II #6 Review by (April 21, 2020)

Review: More bickering about Hank Pym’s mental state fills this issue about a wedding that never shows the ceremony (the original does). The oddest touch is that here it is claimed the officiating minister is a SHIELD agent, hardly possible with the original’s mild-mannered old man. Anyway, we have one of the goofiest villain teams, the Circus of Crime, on hand to attack Thor, despite the idea of causing mayhem at a gathering of superheroes being an incredibly stupid one (even with the Circus showing themselves after the guests have left). Thor by himself is more than a match for these bozos but we also see how much trouble Hawkeye has with them which makes a little more sense. Things get stranger next time.

Comments: Issues #6-7 are an expanded version of AVENGERS #60. Guests at the wedding include Doctor Strange, FF: Reed Richards, Human Torch, Thing, X-Men Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, Iceman, Black Knight, Spider-Man. In the original, Daredevil is present but Cyclops is not. Invisible Girl is mentioned but not seen—which is a pretty clever joke. Sue and Crystal are on the cover, though.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes II #6 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Nick Fury confronts the Avengers (Hawkeye, Black Panther, Vision) over Hank Pym’s going crazy and adopting the new identity of Yellowjacket. Agent Carver maintains that humoring him is still the best strategy for helping him. Fury promises to keep this new development from Much and the NSC while promising to keep and eye on the team. Hawkeye takes the opportunity to ask Fury where Natasha Romanova is; Fury tells him that info is classified….

Yellowjacket has carried Wasp off to his hidden lair where he continues to bad-mouth Hank as a failure and wasted effort. Jan defends Hank while trying to get YJ to recognize the inconsistencies in his own brain but he keeps fighting back—and then he kisses her….

Jan brings YJ to Avengers Mansion to meet Captain America who is still loathe to humor the cracked Hank Pym (and Hawkeye moreso). She announces they are getting married so Cap asks to speak to her in private. In the next room, Cap reveals that the wedding will be well protected by undercover SHIELD agents but Jan is still suffering with Hanks’ mania and insists that marriage is the best way to get Hank back to normal….

That evening, as Death Tiger watches Avengers Mansion while all the famous superheroes gather for the big event. An argument breaks out between Iron Man and the Panther over his (Tony’s) not being consulted. The various guests find all of this a bit puzzling….

Meanwhile, two SHIELD Agents confront Death Tiger on the roof, which turns out to be their hard luck….

In the kitchen, Ringmaster and the Circus of Crime, seeking revenge against Thor, have taken Jarvis hostage and when Hawkeye walks in, they force him to surrender by threatening the butler. The ceremony concluded, the other Avengers keep an eye on Hank as the huge wedding cake is rolled out. Black Knight presents his sword to the bride to make the cut and when she does, a massive fanged snake bursts out….
