Synopsis / Summary / Plot
Bruce Banner and Scarlet Witch revive Captain America in a high-tech casket in a deep hole in a Hydra base in future Japan. Steve Rogers froze himself in prehistoric times as the only way to get back home. His super-soldier body enabled him to survive freezing in WWII so he gambled it would work again. And he expected Tony Stark to defrost him.
Meanwhile (if that means anything in this circumstance) Iron Man is in the same Hydra base in August 1945 with Black Widow and Spider-Man. They too found the body but Tony chooses not to defrost it because he wants it to go ahead to Bruce so that everyone can get returned to the present day. (I don't know how he knows that Banner is in the future, especially as Hulk was supposed to have gone to the prehistoric time.)
Meanwhile (same caveat) Hawkeye and Quicksilver are waiting in the prehistoric site where Hydra buried something (apart from Cap). Shellhead's group are in 1945 Japan where Hydra's base will direct the amplified energy from 1 of the atomic bombs to the buried thing. IM intends to use a portion of that energy to reopen the time portal and get everyone home. (This also seems to involve Banner in the future sending a ripple downtime to 1945 and/or 9,700 BC.)
The 3 groups gather their captured Hydra goons together, and with a flash of light they're all back in the same place in the present day.
Cap explains that he had his body placed as near to Hydra's buried 'treasure' as possible, hoping this would deter them from digging him up. We learn that the treasure was a giant egg. And suddenly a Hydra guy appears through the portal riding a giant reptile - a Kakaranatharaian that was birthed from the egg in the future.
Cap organises the team. He sends Hulk and Iron Man to attack the reptile, and Black Widow and Spider-Man against its Hydra rider. Hawkeye and Quicksilver will handle crowd control (what crowd?), while Scarlet Witch waits for a chance to unleash a hex.
The spider-duo KO the Hydra agent and take him away. Hulk smashes and Iron Man repulses, but the alien lizard ignores them and heads for a nearby city, after wrecking the Hydra base and the time portal so they can't just send it back in time.
Then Hawkeye has an idea. While Hulk and Iron Man try to keep Godzilla away from Tokyo (or wherever they are), the rest of the team excavate the large dragon egg from the bottom of the hole. Then they web the Hydra agent to it.
We know from previous issues that such future Hydra guys can move themselves through space and time. The Avengers wake him up and BW threatens him to make him activate his power to escape. When he does SW hexes him to make that power misfire and take the egg with him.
With its egg removed from its hatchery the dragon disappears, never having been successfully born. The captured Hydra goons go too, presumably because Hydra abandoned its plan. And the Hydra base becomes unwrecked, but abandoned. Hawkeye quotes as his inspiration Marty McFly of the Back to the Future trilogy.
