Avengers: No road home #10 Review by (April 26, 2019)
For the final time the writers of this epic are Mark Waid, Al Ewing and Jim Zub. Erick Arciniega helps Marcio Menyz with the colouring.

The WWII android Human Torch was the 2nd super-character to be introduced by Timely Comics. His was the 1st tale in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. Sub-Mariner was the star of a later story in that issue. But part of that had been printed earlier in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1, so he gets the #1 ranking.

Both of them were mainstays of Timely, and returned briefly in the 50's under the Atlas banner. Then Fantastic Four #4 brought Namor into the Marvel Age. And FF Annual #4 temporarily resurrected the old HT. Avengers #135 revealed that when Ultron created Vision he reused the android HT, so Vision *is* Human Torch.

Then along came John Byrne who permanently resurrected HT in Av West Coast #50, which meant that Vision *couldn't* be Human Torch. Then Kurt Busiek complicated/simplified the situation in Av Forever #8 by saying that Immortus used a special time trick to split HT into both HT and Vision in the same timeline.

The House Of Ideas is a name Marvel jokingly used for itself in the 60's, so that is where the Marvel Universe was created. In this issue the One Above All occupies the House Of Ideas and he is the MU's creator, who may or may not be its God. He's certainly described as outranking all the other cosmic guys like the Living Tribunal and Eternity.

Evald Skorpion was introduced and died in a flashback in Mighty Avengers (2013) #19. He was recreated as Neohedron in a new crystal/gorilla/scorpion body by the Maker in New Avengers (2015) #1 but supposedly died in NAv#2. However he's back again alive and stinging.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers: No road home #10 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Nyx, the Greek Goddess of Night, has plunged the universe into darkness. Opposed by a group of Avengers gathered by Voyager she has successfully regained the 3 Night Shards that contained her soul that Zeus stole from her ages ago. Now she has the power to remake the universe into endless night. And she has entered a mysterious old house that appeared on Long Island, where only the synthezoid Vision was able to follow.

We see some panels of comic art depicting parts of Vision, including 1 in rough pencils and another on fire as the WWII android Human Torch (who is an earlier 'incarnation' of Vizh). A voiceover uses lines from HT's 1st app in Marvel Comics #1.

Vision himself finds himself healed of the increasing damage he's been suffering lately (since this issue's prequel series Avengers: No Surrender). Nyx tells him that this house is the home of the One Above All, the creative force of this reality. (Long Island is the site of just 1 of its many doors.) She claims that she will remake the universe from here. Vision wonders if the original creator will object. But she says the universe has been destroyed and recreated many times. And is it not all part of the creator's plan?

Vision thinks he has been put here to stop her. The primal goddess scoffs at this - he's not even human. Vizh says he has heard many stories, and he's been part of some of them. The Avengers files in his database tell of many heroes who have fought and won against darkness. And here in this House Of Ideas they may rise to the challenge again. This house may have no windows, but all stories are windows and this is where all stories are born.

So now he uses his imagination to conjure up images of some of these heroes, and sends them against Nyx. The 1st bunch are Ironheart. Ms Marvel (Kamala Khan), Wiccan and Winter Soldier. The 2nd wave are Carolina Dean, Chase Stein, Gert Yorkes, Nico Minoru and Old Lace of the Runaways along with Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and Spider-Man (Miles Morales). Followed by Bishop, Cable, Deadpool and Gambit. And then he throws Cannonball, Cloak, Dagger and Elektra at her, with Shadowcat (with Lockheed), She-Hulk and Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) as an encore. Mr Knight (the latest addition to Marc Spector's personas), Nightcrawler, Nova (Richard Rider) and Wolverine pile in too.

All this while Vision has been saying that these imaginative creations of the light of the human spirit will always triumph over solipsistic creations like her sterile universe.

Now as he slowly turns to flame he sends more heroes into the fight. Adam Warlock, Ghost Rider (Danny Ketch), Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Man-Thing. Black Panther, Black Widow, Daredevil, Falcon and Silver Surfer. The original X-Men in their original costumes. Dr Strange and Iron Man. Vision says that Nyx is trying to impose her rule, but this reality ignores rules in favour of possibilities. She can't win because she's playing against the house - the House Of Ideas.

The accompanying 2-page spread celebrates the amazing, the astonishing and the fantastic by including Ant-Man (Henry Pym), the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Sub-Mariner, Thor and Wasp (Janet van Dyne). And Nyx withers and shrinks under the onslaught. The final blows are landed by marvels:- the WWII Captain America (with triangular shield) and Bucky. And then Vision, who has completely transformed into the original android Human Torch grasps her arm, saying that the darkness cannot stand the light of imagination, and burns her to ash.

But of course the darkness will always return. However Vision hopes that eventually it will learn to love the light and thus not die. As he will not now.

Vision leaves the house to greet his relieved comrades Hawkeye, Hercules, Scarlet Witch, Spectrum and Voyager. He tells them that Nyx was vanquished by the light within the house.

All over the world, and the universe, light returns. Black Panther in Avengers Mountain contacts Blue Marvel in Germany to say his Avengers didn't cause it. Adam Brashear says his group aren't responsible either, but they are just dealing with Neohedron (and the Technocracy off-panel) who chose the darkness to team-up and strike. We see America Chavez, Hulkling and Toni Ho. Just then Spectrum joins them to finish off Neohedron. Monica Rambeau tells Adam that she's burned out most of her power, and now she's mortal again. They reaffirm their love.

Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Vision go for coffee with Wanda's beau Doctor Voodoo. It seems Voyager has gone again, but promised not to be a stranger. Hercules has gone to mourn the slain Greek gods in Olympus. But Vizh thinks gods don't die so easily. He says that he himself has decided that it is more human to live than to die. They wonder what happened to Bruce Banner, Conan the Cimmerian and Rocket Raccoon who were sent away by the House last issue.

We see Banner walking down a road in Michigan. He looks at the Sun (or maybe us) and asks "Have *you* ever suffered?". Rocket winds up in a space bar. He tells the bar-being that he wasn't actually stealing stuff in #1, he was returning it. Trying to settle all debts. But at least now he can cross being an Avenger off his bucket list. (Apparently he's heading for his death in Guardians Of The Galaxy.) Conan is enjoying himself in the Savage Land killing dinosaurs. (Presumably that's where we'll find him in the new Savage Avengers series.)

And somewhere in space a new Olympus is born, with an all-new, all-different version of Zeus (and the other gods). And Voyager returns to the Far Shore to find Challenger has escaped while she was gone.

Finally we are told that a year later Hercules will save a Nova Corpsman from a load of space pirates. And he's eager to hear the guy's story.
