Avengers: The Children's Crusade #2: Review

The High Evolutionary is only seen in the background of the twins' birth, and isn't mentioned by name here. But he has a long Marvel history starting with Thor #134, and being heavily involved in the origin of Adam Warlock, as well as that of Wanda and Pietro, and of Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew). As his name suggests his thing was evolving animals to intelligence, including Bova the cow who looked after the twins for a while. He evolved himself into a non-corporeal being, but later de-evolved himself to human again. During the extended publication of this story he appears in Silver Surfer and the (not an abbreviation) FF series. Wundagore Mountain was also the prison of the demon Chthon. It was his influence that made Scarlet Witch capable of using actual magic, as opposed to the hexes that were her mutant power. He too has affected large swathes of Marvel history, on the occult side, largely via his creation the book of Darkhold. Before showing up in Av#186 he was seen in Modred the Mystic tales in Marvel Chillers. Appropriately he was last seen in Mighty Avengers #21-23 where Loki was impersonating Wanda. Last time they met Magneto tried to kill Pietro. This refers to the event in House of M. But in fact Magneto *did* kill him, but Wanda resurrected him when she dissolved the House of M reality. Since then Quicksilver had his own mini-series Son of M, and then joined the (not so) Mighty Avengers for Dark Reign (getting involved with (Loki as) Wanda and Chthon). During this period he reverted to the original green colour of his costume, and claimed (untruthfully) that his past bad actions were due to a Skrull imposter.

Wiccan and Speed visited Transia in Young Avengers Presents #3. Hawkeye and Patriot are a couple, although the rest of the team know it more than they themselves do. They spent most of the time bickering over the leadership. They went on an abortive date in YAP#6, but ending in a kiss. But Kate initially didn't like it when Eli kissed her again when they were trapped underground in Siege: YA. Stature originally shared an attraction with Iron Lad. When he left in YA#6 he left behind his armour to be this version of the Vision. But Vision also inherited some of Iron Lad's personality, and he and Stature have become an item since. There have been 3 different origin stories for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Originally they were just mutant children of the gypsy Django Maximoff from Transia. In Giant-Size Avengers #1 the WWII hero Whizzer claimed they were his children with Miss America, who died in childbirth in the High Evolutionary's HQ on Mount Wundagore in Transia. Distraught Whizzer left them there, and they were given in adoption to the Maximoffs. But then in Avengers #186 and Uncanny X-Men #125 we learnt that they were actually the children of Magneto's wife Magda, who fled to Wundagore from her husband, and didn't live long after giving birth. The conflicting stories were resolved as the twins being presented to Whizzer as his own to assuage the grief of losing his wife. Miss America's actual child was stillborn.
