Avengers and X-Men: Axis #5 Review by (November 13, 2014)
Review: The Avengers turning evil and plotting to take over the world? We’ve never seen anything like this! Unless we’ve read DC’s INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US or any of the old tales about the Justice Lords and all that. But I’m pretty sure Marvel hasn’t done this and that’s what counts! The artwork by the new artists Terry and Rachel Dodson is very good and hides the fact that there really isn’t a hero to root for—or any subtlety as all of the erstwhile heroes come off as cartoony villains. One almost expects to see Apocalypse and new Cap having a “bwaa-haa-haa” contest. The prospect looks like more big violent confusing action scenes as in the first 3 issues, and little else (other than Spidey’s wise-cracking—but that’s a given). If there’s going to be something really creative coming, I can’t imagine what it could be. I see that most of the reviewers are on the same page: no hero, not enough going on, one-dimensional characters—plus complaints about the frequent shifting of artists. Maybe I could save some time by just linking to any of the other hundred sites that reviews comic books.

Comments: Among the assembled Avengers at the Tower are: Black Widow, Cannonball, Hulkling, Hyperion, Mr Fantastic, Power Man (Victor Alvarez), She-Hulk, Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Starbrand, Sunspot, the Thing, Valkyrie, and Wiccan; these all have non-speaking roles.

Avengers and X-Men: Axis #5 Review by (November 16, 2014)
We have some of the usual truth-economies in the publisher's blurb. "Iron Man vs Daredevil for the fate of an infected San Francisco" - we had a hint of that last issue, but it will really happen in Superior Iron Man, set *after* Axis. "The new Sorceress Supreme comes for revenge on Doom" - I must have blinked and missed that, maybe it'll happen in the Loki or Avengers World tie-ins.

Speaking of tie-ins:- We're really into the inverted world now. AXIS: HOBGOBLIN #2 This series is better than it should be. The newly-good Hobgoblin continues to run his franchise operation for wannabe superheroes. But he has a copyright dispute with not-so-newly-bad Phil Urich as the Goblin King. CAPTAIN AMERICA & MIGHTY AVENGERS #1 Sam Wilson and Luke Cage show their new bad sides, and Sam plots with Tony Stark to get rid of the uninverted team members. For more see Peter's synopsis in the Captain America Library. NOVA #23 Spinning directly out of Axis #5 young Nova goes after Kluh and predictably fares badly. SUPERIOR IRON MAN #1 This actually follows after the *whole* Axis Event (with spoilers). The still-inverted Tony Stark decides to make money out of Extremis. Daredevil's there but doesn't meet Iron Man yet. See my synopsis in the Iron Man Library.

Avengers and X-Men: Axis #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

All current and former Avengers are invited to a big meeting at Avengers Tower. Spider-Man and the new Nova arrive at the same time and trade quips before entering. The room is a-buzz with chatter and curiosity over the sudden call. The new Captain America appears on the balcony, backed by his allies (Thor, Scarlet Witch, Luke Cage, Medusa) and announces that the Red Skull has escaped their custody. He accuses one of the members present of aiding that escape—and since identifying the culprit would take too long, he shrinks them all to microscopic size to imprison them in Hank Pym’s subatomic prison. Spidey grabs Nova and leaps through the window but Medusa uses her living tresses to try to snatch Nova back. He rockets off with Spidey in tow but they are pursued by Cap and Wanda. The heroes get away with the help of Magneto, as Wanda heads back to the bad Avengers and announces she has no further use for any of them….

Magneto takes Spidey and Nova to Avengers Mansion where they meet up with the elderly Steve Rogers and the new Nomad (Steve’s adoptive son Ian). Magnus explains how all the super-powered people who were on Genosha to fight Red Onslaught have had their alignment inverted. They see a news story of Kluh (the evil Hulk) on a rampage downtown—and Nova zips out to confront him….

Apocalypse (the former Genesis) and the X-Men invade Avengers Tower where they find Captain America brainwashing Wasp and boasting of the tyranny he he’s plotting. Havok blasts Cap for his treatment of Jan and the rest of the X-Men bounce him around. They learn that the Red Skull is gone. Apocalypse tells Cap to deliver a message: the mutants want all humans to evacuate Manhattan in three hours under pain of death….
