Captain America: Cold War Omega #1 Review by (June 14, 2023)

Review: Nice wrap-up not just to the crossover but to the ongoing plot of Bucky joining the villains’ group, the Outer Circle. Everything makes sense after a solid page of exposition. Now there’s another special issue following and I hope they remember that Earth was invaded by the Phrox, however briefly.

Comments: Written by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, & Tochi Onyebuchi. The cover is a bit misleading as Sharon versus Peggy is the only matchup found in the comic. Misty is a fan of the FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS TV series; a surprise is that Steve Rogers is, too.

Captain America: Cold War Omega #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Story continued from CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY #13.

In Dimension Z, Ian Rogers is in his cell that resembles a child’s bedroom. Black Widow encourages him to let go of his trauma because Earth is being invaded by the monstrous Phrox….

Bucky Barnes, Revolution of the Outer Circle, confronts White Wolf over this invasion which was not part of the plan; White Wolf no longer cares about the plan, he’s taking control….

Outside, Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Captain America (Sam Wilson) with their partners Sharon Carter and Misty Knight are making plans to invade the villains’ stronghold. It is decided that Steve Cap and Misty will head in the front to attack White Wolf directly while Sam Cap and Sharon will sneak in the back to face Bucky. So, the former dash in and quickly fight their way to the throne room. Sam Cap and Sharon enter via the roof and Sharon faces Dryad, her Aunt Peggy, with Sharon taking on the mask of her friend Roger Aubrey, the recently killed Destroyer. Sam Cap attacks Bucky. In the dungeon, Ian tells Natasha that Steve sees him as hope but hope doesn’t change things, sometimes everything needs to be broken. The discussion continues while we cut to the various battles. Finally, Steve Cap defeats White Wolf and Sam Cap subdues Bucky. Steve is reunited with Ian but Ian still has something to do; he is laying aside his trauma to become what he is: he suddenly transforms into an armored ruler and takes the throne of Dimension Z. Bucky tells Steve that Cap was a pawn in this plan, doing what Bucky knew he would do. Steve Cap figures out Bucky’s plan: as the new Revolution of the Outer Circle, his first goal was to keep Neganite out of the bad guys’ hands and so he manipulated Steve Cap into forming a new Invaders to retake Manhattan. And then Bucky had to get everyone out of Dimension Z, the sole source of Neganite so he allowed White Wolf to capture the place and kidnap Ian which brought the Caps there to defeat WW so that Ian could become the ruler. The two Caps agree that the next steps involve everyone going home….

Story continued in CAPTAIN AMERICA #750.
