Captain America: Symbol of Truth #8 Review by (December 28, 2022)

Review: Shades of THE IMMORTAL HULK! Body horror! Seriously, Falcon’s transformation was worse at the end of the previous issue but here it makes the cover being therefore harder to avoid. And the bulk of the issue isn’t about Joaquin but Sam Cap and Nomad. We learn about the White Wolf’s depredations, giving us a better picture of the Big Bad than we have had before. And when Cap and Nomad argue about how violent the mission will be, we discover that Senator Mansfield chose Nomad for a reason and it’s Cap who may be the odd man out on this mission. Some nicely complicated moral and political issues are being raised here. So here’s hoping they will be addressed with some nuance and intelligence.

Comments: Joaquin Torres was introduced in CAPTAIN AMERICA: SAM WILSON #3 mutated into a vampiric bird-man by Dr. Karl Malus; he became the Falcon in issue #6 of that title. Nightshade/Tilda Johnson first appeared in CAPTAIN AMERICA #164 and played a part in the notorious “Capwolf Saga.” (issues #403-408); she later appeared with Black Panther and in SHADOWLAND, NIGHTHAWK, and OCCUPY AVENGERS. Issue includes a full-page tribute to Stan Lee for the 100th anniversary of his birth (December 28, 2022, the date of this review).

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #8 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In a war-torn section of Mohannda, Captain America and Nomad are trying to get the refugees to a safe haven when they are surrounded by tanks and fired upon by helicopters. The two heroes fight off the military while the little boy searches for the hidden entrance to the haven; when he finds it and opens the door, Cap and Nomad make sure everyone is inside before dashing in and closing the entrance. Inside, Cap is angry at Nomad for his violent ways but apologizes, realizing he is on edge for worrying about Falcon

…who has morphed into a vampiric bird-man at the hospital and has to restrain himself from drinking the nurse’s blood. He hurls himself through a window and makes it to his abuela’s house. She recognizes him and has him brought inside….

In the haven, Bathabile introduces the two heroes to Dr. Ayanda Sisulu, leader of the resistance. Dr. Sisulu is grateful for the support from the USA…until she learns that it is just Cap and Nomad. They tell the heroes about the White Wolf, who took control of the parliament and  established a land reclamation campaign which resulted in millions being murdered for their land, with Bathabile revealing that her entire family was killed before her eyes. Dr. Sisulu was forced out of her position at the university for failure to support the government-mandated curriculum. Sam Cap mentions White Wolf’s attempt to release a bioweapon in neighboring Wakanda and that’s when Nightshade comes forth. The former villain, who insists on being called by her real name, Tilda Johnson, was one of the multitude of African Americans who sought paradise in Wakanda and who were forced to leave after Captain America’s intervention. And now she is ready to fight the White Wolf and his technologically advanced Apartheid state. Then word comes that the government has just bombed the hospital….
