Invaders, The #10 Review by (August 7, 2018)

Review: Ah, the Dread Deadline Doom! These days if a writer or artist can't meet their deadline, publication would be delayed with some titles being stretched out years past their expected dates. But back in the day they used to maintain a strict monthly schedule and if the planned story was not ready, the publishers would resort to a reprint or a fill-in issue kept for just such an occasion. This is one of those, a reprint with new framing material to make it seem like it's part of the continuity. The editor reveals that creators Roy and Frank got a little behind when the title switched to monthly publication.

As for the comic in hand, that ridiculous cover with giant figures floating above the ground signal what we get inside: a typically crazy and absurd tale full of fast-paced action and plentiful word balloons featuring a silly villain (he doesn't actually reap anything in the course of the tale) and very very lucky heroes. The old comics were a lot of fun but Marvel came along to teach us that comics should make sense—at least for the most part.

Comments: Reprint of a story originally published in CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #22 (January 1943) with art by Al Avison and Al Gabriele and new framing material added. Sole appearance of the Reaper who is not connected to any other character with a similar name, especially Avengers foe Grim Reaper and the X-Force character. Adolf Hitler's first appearance in the title.

Invaders, The #10 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

As the Invaders (Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, Toro) rush the critically wounded Jacqueline Falsworth and her father Lord Falsworth a/k/a Union Jack to a hospital, Cap's mind goes back to a recent adventure...

Adolf Hitler dispatches his agent the Reaper to the United States. Posing as a prophet, Reaper announces that a vision has revealed that there is no such thing as wrong. This convinces many people who begin rioting against the police. Reaper is arrested but he can't be charged as he has not broken any laws. Captain America and Bucky visit the Reaper at his hotel and confront him; a fight breaks out with the Reaper's henchmen and Reaper calls the police on the heroic duo. Next, the Reaper gathers his American Nazi supporters to join him in agitating for America to make peace with Hitler, aided by the dupes among the public. Bucky uncovers evidence that the Reaper is a Nazi agent and he and Cap break up the rally. Cap pursues the Reaper into the subway where the villain steps on the third rail and is electrocuted. Back in Germany, Hitler throws a fit.

… and back in the present, the heroes and their wounded allies arrive at hospital....
