Invaders, The #12 Review by (August 21, 2018)

Review: Another nice issuesand Frank Robbins' distinctive art style admirably suits the new hero Spitfire making her speeding around resemble dancing with fire, a new look for a superhero(ine). And I hadn't noticed his ability to make crowded panels lucid and exciting, giving the tale a more urgent look.

Comments: Part two of three parts. First appearance of Spitfire in costume. First appearance of Jacob Goldstein who becomes the Golem in the next issue (uh, spoiler).

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invaders, The #12 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Brooding over losing Jacqueline Falsworth to Captain America, the Human Torch flies around in the London night pondering a nagging bit of memory: what did Professor Gold mean by his cry “everything that happens from this moment forward is [their] responsibility?” He flies to the Tower of London and persuades the guards to let him in to talk to Gold. Interviewing the Professor, Torch learns that Gold, born Goldstein, is Jewish and that he was forced to aid the Nazis by the threat that they would kill his brother Jacob, a prisoner in the Warsaw Ghetto. Torch offers to rescue Jacob and heads off to contact the other Invaders. After Torch relates what he learned, Sub-Mariner offers his flagship for the flight to Poland. Jacqueline Falsworth reveals her new persona: the superheroine Spitfire, who can move at super-speed, leaving a flaming trail behind her. She demonstrates that she is fit to join the team on their mission by zipping around and confusing the guys, including Bucky and Toro. They accept her and she leaves with the blessing of her father Lord Falsworth/Union Jack....

Arriving in Warsaw, the Invaders locate Jacob Goldstein who refuses to leave, believing that patient submission to the will of God is the only safe course, after all the story of the Golem that saved the Jews of Prague was only a legend (this is called foreshadowing). Nazi troops arrive in tanks and the heroes proceed to smash them to pieces—until they threaten to slaughter the civilians, then the Invaders surrender and are gassed into unconsciousness. Jacob Goldstein realizes he has been blind to the evil around him and he is determined to fight back....
