Invaders, The #7 Review by (July 17, 2018)

Review: The Invaders meet a Nazi Vampire—and it is truly an offbeat story arc. And with a distinctly 70s outlook, we find Cap has a new viewon enemy soldiers, having been part of the enemy while brainwashed by the Red Skull in issues #5-6; this prevents him from cheering the downing of aircraft. WWII pacifism didn't go over at the time but in the post-Vietnam era, it was required of heroes, even Living Legends. Quite enjoyable and a nice showcase for Frank Robbins' equally offbeat artwork. Lord Falsworth's blue eyes really jump off the page! Fun from the “olden days” i.e. my childhood and youth.

Comments: Part one of three parts. First appearance of Baron Blood, Lord Falsworth, and Jacqueline Falsworth who will become Spitfire in issue #11-12. Torch calls a British soldier “Tommy;” “Tommy Atkins” was a term for the typical soldier, similar to “GI Joe” in the USA.

Period Pop-Culture Details: Dracula star Bela Lugosi, Toro cites Harry Truman's quote “If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invaders, The #7 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Returning to London, the Invaders (Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, Toro) are immediately caught up in helping the Brits fight off another German air raid. When the fighting is over, Namor dives into the Thames while the other guys plan to hit the night spots—except for the Human Torch. He wants to be alone to walk the streets and brood about his non-human status. He hears a scream and races to the scene to find a woman and a wounded soldier being attacked by a costumed vampire. The monster conjures up winds to snuff out Torch's flames but he quickly makes a comeback as the vampire “Baron Blood” retreats in an even more furious wind. Torch helps the woman, Jacqueline Falsworth, get the injured man to a hospital and then she invites him home. There he meets Jacqueline's father, Lord Falsworth, who reveals that he was the costumed hero of World War I, Union Jack, member of Freedom's Five. Jacqueline tells him that Baron Blood, Union Jack's nemesis, has also returned. Torch summons the other Invaders and they take Namor's flagship but Baron Blood intercepts them and hurls Cap out of the cockpit. Toro rescues Cap and they continue to the Falsworth residence, where they receive a warm welcome. Meanwhile, the vampire disguises himself as a regular human and joins the party at Falsworth Manor—as His Lordship's nephew John....
