Winter Soldier: The Bitter March #2 Review by (March 28, 2014)
Review: A thrilling Cold War caper continues with the character interplay overwhelming the gunplay. We learn about 60s politics, the shortcomings of Communism, the regrets of scientists who collaborated with Nazis (even unwillingly) and meet another villain who resembles Thin White Duke David Bowie! A rich and entertaining tale that continues to cross-reference the current story in CAPTAIN AMERICA, here with the insidious Dr Mindbubble! Groovy!

Comments: Dr. Mindbubble made his first appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA (2012) #16; this story is set many years before that.

Winter Soldier: The Bitter March #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

1968: SHIELD Agent Ran Shen is trying to escort ex-Nazis Peter and Mila Hitzig out from behind the Iron Curtain to keep their Alchemy Formula out of enemy hands; he contacts SHIELD scientist Horace Littleton (the future Dr. Mindbubble) who links him up with a train to the West. At this point, the Soviet Agent Winter Soldier catches up to them, leading Ran Shen to fight his way past him and Hydra goons to make the train. We see, however, that it is Winter Soldier’s memory of Captain America training him to never shoot a man in the back that allows the SHIELD agent to escape….

Aboard the train, the Hitzigs want to know what will happen to them in America. Peter’s arrogant Nazi diatribe prompts an angry response from Ran and he departs in a huff. Mila explains that she didn’t want the Alchemy Formula to fall into Nazi hands but Peter betrayed her and she was forced to cooperate with them….

In the dining car, Peter Hitzig meets with Hydra Agent The Drain who prepares him for their rescue that evening. As Mila and Ran are bonding over their political views, Winter Soldier crashes in through the window and locks Ran in a death-duel. Then The Drain’s henchman with electrified hands enters through the doorway….
