Captain Marvel #1 Review by (July 12, 2023)

Review: Racial violence is an issue that has only gotten worse in the nearly thirty years since this comic book was published; there’s really not much to say. Captain America sums up such hate groups as those who “would deny others their fair share of the American Dream.” Sounds more like they would deny them their fair share of humanity. The nicest parts of an admittedly nasty issue center on Monica’s use of her powers both in combat and for pure joy, giving the artist a nice showcase for spectacle. A shame there weren’t more of these.

Comments: Despite a “1” on the cover, the indicia calls this Vol. 2 issue #2, following the 1989 one-shot. Most sources treat this as a separate series. The title comes from a quote by Audre Lorde, found on the title page. The racist vigilante group Sons of the Serpent debuted in AVENGERS #32-33; they have been broken up and reformed many, many times, usually facing the Avengers or the Defenders. Skinhead previously appeared in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #56-57; this is his second and final appearance as of 2023. FBI Agent Derek Freeman was introduced in AVENGERS #263 and has returned a few times in that title and in CAPTAIN AMERICA; his first name is spelled “Derrek” in this issue, though. Robert “Rocket Racer” Farrell usually frequents the Spider-Man titles. Inking duties are divided among Dennis Jensen, Barb Kaalberg, and Mark McKenna.

Captain Marvel #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Two members of the white supremacist group the Sons of the Serpent chase a pair of Chinese students across the campus of Empire State University, shouting anti-Japanese rhetoric. Captain Marvel, in town for a business conference, is flying around the city for fun and hears the victims screaming. She investigates and fights the two Serpents; their advanced weaponry takes her by surprise, knocking her flat. One of the thugs blasts her with a charged triple-iron; CM responds with microwaves, burning the guy with his own weapon. After the police pick up the hoods, CM flies back to her hotel, entering the window invisibly. She finds FBI Agent Derek Freeman waiting for her, revealing he knows her secret identity.  He shows her a photo of Ray Washington, a teacher at the University; he is hosting the minority business seminar Monica was invited to and he is Freeman’s nephew. Ray is also organizing campus minority organizations to put together a night patrol to protect students from attack by groups like the Sons of the Serpent. Freeman wants Captain Marvel to see that Ray stays safe. He gives her a report on the Sons of the Serpent; Monica figures she can do better…

…so, she goes to Avengers Mansion and has a long talk with Captain America about the Sons. He gives her the inside info and offers the help of the Avengers if she wants it. CM decides to handle it on her own….

The next day at ESU, the minority business owners meet with Ray Washington at a common hall and they learn the Sons of the Serpent are rallying outside. The Sons fire on the minorities in the crowd. Monica changes into Captain Marvel and fights back, hitting them hard because she knows they are wearing body armor. But again, she is overwhelmed and a Serpent chokes her with a charged triple-iron; this time she turns into pure light, blinding all of the bad guys and knocking them out. When the police arrive, she has four of the Serpents subdued—but one of them morphs into a huge bloblike creature which seizes CM with its tentacles and pulls her inside itself. She spots a human skeleton inside then she crashes out. The monster, called “Skinhead,” smashes the building, raining large chunks of masonry on her then it resumes a human form and flees. CM rises from the rubble, annoyed. Student Robert Farrell reveals to Monica that he is a part-time superhero called Rocket Racer and tells her all about Skinhead. He is a student named Eddie Cross who was previously leading a band of skinheads at ESU which led to Spider-Man coming to the campus to battle them; in the ruckus, Cross was splashed with a chemical that turned him into the gelatinous monster CM fought. The strangest part is that Eddie Cross is Jewish. Cap visits his father Rabbi Chaim Cross who explains how his pride in his heritage lead to Eddie’s rejection of it all by joining a White supremacist group. He accompanies Monica back to the school where she learns that Ray’s minority students’ group is going to confront that evening’s rally of the Sons of the Serpent….

And that evening, the Sons of the Serpent arrive and they are met by a multicultural group of students; But they come in peace, Ray making a speech against the hate group, leading several of the Serpents to quit the group and side with the students. Eddie Cross transforms into Skinhead and Rabbi Cross pleads with him to reject the Sons; Eddie exits the blob monster and embraces his father. The blob monster, now lacking in human control, goes on a rampage and CM blows it to bits with some creative use of electromagnetic energy. Those who witnessed all this vow to make things better….
