Hercules: Twilight of a God #2 Review by (August 22, 2023)

Review: By far the most violent issue of the miniseries, the credit goes to the new Silver Surfer, a vicious vengeful killer. The action is apocalyptic and savage with Herc’s blow to his enemy a real shocker for such a lighthearted series.

Comments: Final appearance of this new (and brief) Silver Surfer. Hercules destroyed the new Silver Surfer’s world in HERCULES: PRINCE OF POWER (1982) #3.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hercules: Twilight of a God #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The Kawan Silver Surfer vows revenge against Hercules and when Herc attacks him, he seizes the demigod by the throat and informs him of his crimes. The Surfer was a member of the Brotherhood which worshipped Galactus. Herc visited their world-ship and clobbered them, leading the Brotherhood to die by suicide, fearing Galactus’ anger. The Surfer was off world at the time and returning, he saw the disaster and sought out his god, hoping to be killed and join his people. Instead, Galactus was impressed by his anger and transformed him into his herald, promising him vengeance against Hercules. And now that Herc is in his ands…the Imperial Guard, led by Herc’s grandchildren, attacks the Surfer and swoop down to rescue the plummeting Hercules, Juno seizing him by his hair so they can zip away….

The Rigellians detect the massive black hole that was once Galactus and they plan a rescue mission for the multitude of Rigellian colonies there. Needing to dispatch a Recorder to investigate the phenomenon, they discover the closed Recorder to the area is Recorder 417, assigned to Hercules….

Back on Wilamean, Silver Surfer engages the Imperial Guard in an aerial battle while, on the ground, Herc leads the firing of the ion cannons. The Surfer is unharmed and smashes Hercules so hard he crashes through several levels of city and lands in the sewage treatment plant. The two hit each other until they wreck the city’s hydrogen processors, sending flames through the water system, startling Skyppi in the hospital when fire shoots out of his sink. Worse happens to Prime Minister Spincor who is bathing when his bathroom is engulfed in flames. Herc finally manages to wound the Surfer when he drives a huge wooden splinter into his foe’s shoulder. Soldiers arrive, led by the grandchildren then Surfer seizes Juno….

In the palace, Recorder 417 relays a message from the Rigellians to Emperor Arimathes that they request a sub-space audience with him. Recorder then shows the Emperor film that shocks him….

Hercules demands that the Silver Surfer release Juno; the monster refuses. Herc taunts the creature, mocking his god Galactus, driving him into a rage. Surfer hurls Juno away from him and unleashes a blast of the Power Cosmic at Hercules. Ursus leaps in front to protect his grandfather and is obliterated. Hercules and everyone around are stunned at this development, then Hercules, consumed by divine anger, beats the Silver Surfer into the ground, breaks his board in half, and uses the jagged edge to decapitate the Herald of Galactus. Then Hercules collapses and the medics are summoned….
