Thor Annual #1 Review by (July 5, 2023)

Review: The first story is marked by an elaborate impressionistic art that ably conveys the grandeur of Thor and the chaos of his battle with the villain. Thor settles into his role as All-Father and the series is ready to move forward into his next series. And not to worry, Sif’s eyes have healed by the time of the next story. Heimdall was killed in VALKYRIE: JANE FOSTER #2 and Sif took his place as guardian of the Rainbow Bridge in KING THOR #4. The setting is surprisingly elaborate for a story that occupies less than a full comic issue but “dystopian alternate New York” is a cliché by now so maybe it’s for the best that we got it over with so quickly. The second story deals with a couple of preliminary matters, notably reforging Mjolnir to remove the cracks and make it easier for the artist to draw. Sometimes plot points have a practical benefit. Mjolnir had been destroyed and rebuilt with cracks in THOR (2020) #23.

Comments: First story written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. Cameos by Loki and Hela, each in their own realm. M.Y.T.H.O.S. stands for Master of Yggdrasil, Tyrant of Humanity, Omnipotent Savior. Second story: As with IMMORTAL HULK, IMMORTAL THOR continues the practice of placing the story title at the end of the issue.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor Annual #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The World Tree is conquered, along with the Ten Realms; observing this has blinded the guardian Sif, who can only utter the word, “Mythos.” Thor, the All-Father, takes off for Midgard. He lands in a desolate New York City and can detect the presence of none of his friends or allies. At the center of the city sits a ziggurat made of the regathered shards of the Rainbow Bridge. He calls on the master of this realm to show himself and he does: it is MODOK in a giant robotic body, now calling himself M.Y.T.H.O.S. Seizing the power of the World Tree has enabled him to conquer the Ten Realms and banish all heroes from Midgard. Thor attacks him but Mjolnir does no harm; MYTHOS responds with a power blast that hurls Thor back a great distance. With retreat seeming the best option, Thor wanders the streets and comes across a young man trying to protect others from a knife-wielding thief. Recognizing the young man as Peter Parker, Thor drives off the thief and discovers that Peter does not know him. Peter lays out the situation for him: MYTHOS has turned the world into his own dystopia; pleb-people serve the Master and anyone who does a really good job is promoted to serve in the palace. Peter tells Thor, “The battles you can’t win are the most important to fight.” Thor takes heart from this and returns to battle MYTHOS, hitting him then being blasted and returning over and over again. Finally, Thor is able to tear the monster’s arm off and hit him in the face with it. Thor then strikes the ground with Mjolnir and the Ten Realms return to normal. Thor returns to Asgard and tells Sif of the punishment he, as All-Father, has meted out to MODOK: he has placed him in a room with a mirror that he may begin to look inward and find answers. Thor has already found his.

Synopsis: Thor goes out to greet Sif as she stands guard over the broken Rainbow Bridge. She is surprised to see him wearing this old outfit. It is to remind people that though he is now All-Father, he remains Thor. He uses the power of the All-Father to reforge Mjolnir, making as good as new. Thor is pleased…

…but we see a vision of Thor, battered and bleeding, wielding Mjolnir in his right hand, a battle axe in his left, and looking defiant….
