United States of Captain America #1 Review by (June 30, 2021)

Review: Miniseries celebrates the 80th anniversary of the creation of Captain America showing a number of people across the country stepping up to protect others as inspired by Cap’s ideals. This follows some ruminations on the nature of the American Dream and its abuses which deal with some of the unrest in the United States over the past year that won’t be elaborated on here. The comic stresses that anyone can be a hero and looks to be showing heroism in all its diversity (though I hope they include some heroes whose mission doesn’t involve beating people up). First up we have a homeless gay youth who feels called to help other runaways and wanderers. Off to a good start, I reckon.

Comments: First story: Title is a quote from the film ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Second story: Dazzler is mentioned on a club marquee. Issue includes a one-page profile of the Captain America of the Railways (Aaron Fischer).

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

United States of Captain America #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Steve Rogers broods over the two American dreams and one lie. A guy dressed as Captain America crashes into the room, beats up Steve, and makes off with the shield. Steve calls the Falcon to fly out and track the shield thief, while donning his Cap outfit and pursuing on motorcycle. Sam sees the surprisingly speedy thief at a railroad bridge; the thief hurls the shield, smashing the front of an oncoming train and the disappears again. A second train is coming, on course to hit the stopped train. Cap rushes to the oncoming train and has them hit the brakes but there’s still a collision. Cap works to rescue the injured passengers and spies a fellow in a Cap outfit—but it isn’t the thief: it’s a teenager in a makeshift Cap outfit and mocked up shield. His name is Aaron Fischer and he’s a wanderer, inspired by Captain America to help anyone he can. A female sniper shoots Aaron in the arm before diving into the river and getting away. Aaron mentions a whole loose network of Captains America across the country, helping where they can. After taking Aaron to the hospital, Steve and Sam decide to search for these other Caps to protect them from the assassin and maybe find the shield….

Synopsis: Aaron Fisher, thrown out by his father for being queer, goes to the big city where he learns other homeless youth have been disappearing. He decides to look for them since that’s Captain America would do; suspecting that Roxxon has something to do with it, he breaks into a corporate building where he is thumped over the head and wakes up in a Roxxon forced labor camp where the situation is outlined by a kid named Adrian. Aaron decides to fight back: he puts together a simple Cap-inspired costume with a wooden shield and attacks the place’s four guards and defeats them. He and Adrian, his new boyfriend, hop a train out of there….
