Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #117 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Last issue saw Peter Parker struggling to keep the ceiling from collapsing and crushing everyone in the convention hall! Just after everyone gets out, his webbing gives way and the ceiling collapses. Through the darkness and smoke, Peter fashions a web-shield to further hide his identity until he can escape the hall and blend back in with the crowd. Richard Raleigh is asked his thoughts on the sabotage, and he clarifies that he’s not backing down an inch from his war on crime, on matter how they try to intimidate him! In the bustling crowd, Peter reunites with Gwen and Mary Jane, all relieved to see each other unhurt. J. Jonah Jameson berates Peter for not getting any photos and Peter points out it’s his day off, as he heads to take Gwen and MJ home.

Elsewhere, a mysterious figure called the Disruptor is enraged to discover that his sabotage of the rally was foiled by Spider-Man! He heads down to the basement of his lair, where a scientist named Thaxton works on the Smasher, proving themselves as the ones behind his attacks. Thaxton shows the improvements he’s made and provides the Disruptor with a new control switch that he can use to control the Smasher. Meanwhile, Jameson discusses his plans to endorse Raleigh for Mayor with Robbie Robertson and Norman Osborn. Osborn says that Raleigh will need to provide more specifics on his stances before he’ll get his vote. Robbie can’t help but be suspicious of Raleigh and plans to look into his background while Jameson leaves for a meeting with Raleigh. At that moment, Spider-Man is swinging around when he comes upon a fundraising party for Raleigh being held up by some crooks. Spidey easily takes out the crooks and leaves them webbed for the police.

Returning to his apartment, Peter calls up Aunt May to check on her, still worried about her staying at Doctor Octopus’s old headquarters. Afterwards, Harry takes Peter to a youth rally for Raleigh where they meet up with Gwen and Mary Jane. Raleigh continues his promises to turn their city into one they can be proud of before driving off. Not long after, Peter’s spider-sense alerts him to the arrival of the Disruptor and his goons, spraying tear gas from their car! Peter changes to Spider-Man and tackles the Disruptor, preventing him from burning down the registration stands. The Disruptor’s goons pile on Spidey, allowing him to get away. Later, Jameson goes to meet with Raleigh and ends up mentioning Robbie looking into him, which is overheard by someone outside! Later still, the Disruptor returns to his lair to use his control device and commands the Smasher to bring Joe Robertson to him, dead or alive! To be continued!

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #117 Review by (January 7, 2026)

Review: This issue continues re-adapting the story from Spectacular Spider-Man #1, beginning with the sabotage on the convention hall. Interestingly, in the original story, Peter was able to keep the ceiling from collapsing whereas here it does end up crumbling (after everyone gets out). This sort of ties into the biggest change to this story, which is the introduction of the Disruptor, a costumed identity for Raleigh. While his identity isn’t revealed until next issue, it’s pretty obvious considering the original story is mostly intact plot-wise. The Disruptor identity hides that he’s shady for longer but creates some new questions. In the original story, Raleigh’s plan was to fake attacks on his campaign in order to get more people to vote for him. Here, that would seem to still be the case, except for the fact that he’s upset that his sabotage failed. If he’s still doing this to get more people to vote for him, why try to kill so many of his supporters? Not only that, he keeps up the Disruptor ruse of trying to end Raleigh even when he’s alone, which is odd to say the least.

This issue also adds a completely new scene where the Disruptor attacks a Raleigh youth rally in order to destroy the voter records. While this is obviously just an excuse to have him actually do something as the Disruptor in public, since Raleigh was all behind the scenes in the original, it again raises the question of him trying to actively sabotage his own voters. The other biggest change is the necessity of having to remove all traces of Captain Stacy from the story, since he was still alive when the original was published. He’s replaced by Norman Osborn in one scene and Robbie is instead made the one suspicious of Raleigh, like Captain Stacy was in the original. This issue was a bit more up and down. While the Disruptor identity creates some weird questions and largely seems a bit unnecessary, the added scenes do help the pacing, and the added dialogue is largely improved from the original. So, it kind of evens out.

Comments: First issue with a credited colorist, in this case Stan Goldberg. At one point, Richard Raleigh talks with real life news reporter Geraldo Rivera. First appearance of the Disruptor identity. All traces of Captain Stacy have been removed from the story and replaced with Norman Osborn and Joe Robertson. Like last issue, Gerry Conway provided additional dialogue. Tony Mortellaro provided background inking, while Sam Rosen and Art Simek shared lettering duties.
