Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #106 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Spider-Man’s spider-sense alerts him to one of the spy cameras set up all over the city and he quickly realizes whoever is using them might have seen him without his mask! He webs up the gizmo, obscuring its lens and on the other end of the camera, Spencer Smythe confirms that he saw Spidey unmasked! Spidey’s about to smash the camera when he notices a tag on it labeling it property of the police, making him wonder if the law has been tracking him. He notices more cameras set up all over and tries to figure out what to do about his current predicament. He suddenly thinks of something and heads to the lab of Dr. Curt Connors. Connors give him free reign of his lab and Peter uses it to construct a mask that looks just like his face! Meanwhile, J. Jonah Jameson rages that he’s completely lost control of Smythe’s robot, when the control panel goes up in smoke! Robbie comes in to see what’s going on and tells Jameson about the theft of the master control unit that guides the security cameras.

Back at his lair, a satisfied Smythe meets with the four top gang leaders in New York to demonstrate his control over the cameras all over the city. He points out that he can guide their men and watch for incoming police, to increase successful crimes exponentially. He uses the scanners to locate Spider-Man once more and sees Spidey taking off the fake Peter Parker mask, making them all question if that really is what he looks like! Smythe then demonstrates his newest Spider Slayer, one he can ride in himself, in order to end Spider-Man and give them free reign of the city! Meanwhile, Spidey notices yet another protest in front of the Daily Bugle, this time about the cameras all over the city, and Jameson is leading it! This equally surprises Randy and Spidey finds it astonishing to see the two cooperating. Spidey swings down to express his support which only has the effect of Jameson confirming that he was partially behind the Spider Slayer, and that he’ll get Spidey next time!

Peter heads back to his apartment where he finds a very pensive Harry, still stressed about Mary Jane. Peter suggests that Harry might be coming on too strong, when Mary Jane herself stops by with a bunch of others to throw a pizza party for Harry. She tries flirting with Peter yet again but Peter side steps her so he can go pick up Gwen. Peter picks up Gwen who suggests they check in on Flash, which Peter isn’t thrilled about. They find a disheveled Flash who is adamant that nothing is wrong with him, but both can tell that he’s not telling the whole truth. All throughout their date, Peter agonizes about it until he asks Gwen why she’s so interested in Flash. She clarifies that she’s worried about him, not interested, just like she would be for any friend in trouble, which snaps Peter out of his jealousy. Peter drops off Gwen and changes to Spider-Man to more quickly make it back to Flash’s to get more info out of him. However, on the way Spidey ends up caught in a giant, metallic spider-web that quickly tangles him up, courtesy of Smythe and his newest Spider Slayer! As the Slayer crawls down the web towards Spidey, Smythe reveals himself inside, boasting that Spider-Man doesn’t have a chance this time! To be continued!

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #106 Review by (October 15, 2025)

Review: Last issue, Spencer Smythe used the cameras set up all over the city to witness Spider-Man unmasking! What a shocking cliffhanger! It actually ends up not being a big deal at all. Spidey’s brilliant plan is to make a Peter Parker mask and have Smythe see him taking that off to make him question if it ever really was Spidey’s true face! It’s a pretty silly way of getting around the problem (why would he be wearing it over his Spider-Man mask if it wasn’t really what he looked like?) and feels like something right out of 50/60’s era DC! Though one of the crime bosses does point out that even if Peter is what Spidey really looks like, he’s so average looking that it wouldn’t really help. “I saw Spider-Man’s face! He’s a brown-haired white guy!” Surprising amount of realism there. Besides that, we have more of the same character drama that doesn’t really progress at all. Harry’s still stressed about MJ who’s still shamelessly flirting with Peter (you’d think she’d cool it considering recent events), and there’s still something vaguely wrong with Flash. Both subplots just kind of end up spinning their wheels. Mostly an interim issue setting up Spidey to face the 4th Spider Slayer next issue!

Comments: Debut of the fourth iteration of the Spider Slayer (the same as the third but bigger so Smythe can sit inside).
