A Shi’ar ship passes through a wormhole to Earth, heading toward the Andes Mountains. There, the Avengers are escaping the destruction of the Gatherers’ citadel with Magdalene, astonished that her leader Proctor tried to kill them all. They are trapped in a snowstorm, their Quinjet destroyed, then suddenly the Shi’ar ship lands and the fierce-looking person who emerges introduces herself as Deathcry, explaining she was sent by Lilandra to aid them in their time of strife. And then they are attacked by a trio of Kree Sentries….

Synopsis

By T Vernon
Rating: 3 stars
Late at night, Jarvis goes out for a walk on the Avengers Mansion grounds and runs into a pensive Sersi floating in the air. She explains that she was meditating but he asks if she is all right. Sersi replies that everyone fears she is going insane. She now fears her dreams; Jarvis encourages her to tell him, as “a bad dream shared is a terror spared” (quoting his mother). Sersi explains how in her dream she is kissing a handsome man when a mystery figure appears behind them, terrifying the young man. Jarvis prompts her to go deeper and then the villain appears fully formed (it’s Proctor, no surprise). She doesn’t know the man so Jarvis comforts her, offering her a cup of warm milk. He suggests that dreams can never hurt you….

Review / Commentaries

Avengers, The (1963 series) #364 Review by (September 27, 2025)
Comments: First story: Part one of three parts. Admiral Galen-Kor was seen briefly in issue #350; the other Kree characters are new with this issue; later they are dubbed the Lunatic Legion.

Second story: The lover in Sersi’s dream is the man who was murdered in issue #357.

Review: The first story kicks off another sci-fi adventure for the Avengers, with the Kree planning to nuke Earth. The big deal is the introduction of Deathcry, who certainly stops the show with her fierce look and angry manner; she will also end up on lists of the worst Avengers but I intend to give her a fair trial so stay tuned. Meanwhile, the rest of the story seems like a long confusing action scene; Epting and Palmer have been art favorites of mine in this run so I’m a bit surprised that I had trouble following the fight and especially that the explosion that tops off the second act was relegated to a slim panel tucked away at the top of the page mostly obscured by boxes full of words. It gets better soon.

Second story: Character-centered vignette works well by pairing the unlikely duo of Jarvis and Sersi but is hurt by substandard art. It’s mainly to reinforce the pressure the Gatherers are putting on the Avengers, specifically the Proctor/Sersi link which we are still waiting to have explained.
