Avengers #136 Review by (March 23, 2014)
The cover image is taken direct from Amazing Adventures #12, with John Romita adding the floating heads of the 3 Avengers who aren't in the issue, and Gaspar Saladino doing the new cover lettering. We don't know who redid the cover colouring to give Beast the dark blue fur we know and love. At the time of the original issue his fur was grey, as seen inside. This was a reprint to cope with a deadline problem. (These days they'd just delay the issue.) But it isn't just a random reprint. Most of that run of AA starring the Beast was written by Steve Englehart, and when Beast joins the Avengers next issue he'll bring elements of that series with him. In AA#11 Gerry Conway turned Hank McCoy from a human-looking mutant into a grey-furred 'animal'. Iron Man guest-starred in #12 reprinted here (which justifies me putting this issue in the IM Library). Beast's fur changed to dark blue in #15. McCoy was working for the Brand Corporation who will play a large part in the current series from #140. Hank met Patsy Walker in AA#13 and she will follow him into this series in #139, and become Hellcat in #144. And just to complete the picture, Englehart used the Secret Empire (from Tales to Astonish) as baddies in AA and later took them to a memorable story-line in Captain America (also involving the rest of the old X-Men).
