Review: So we begin with a repeat of Spitfire’s and Union Jack’s sacrifice to destroy one of the two Dogs of War—so how come there are three left? Then the Invaders and Avengers arrive (ta-daa) five minutes too late to help…Then suddenly Paul Anselm and his buddies are African-American. Seriously, what happened to the colorist?...Bucky glibly tosses off “War is Hell” like it’s a joke; Spidey makes some sort of joke about hearing all of his bad jokes in the afterlife (swell, now he’s joking about joking); Wolverine makes some incomprehensible crack about friendly fire—thus trivializing everything the soldiers have been through…So Anselm has been bleeding for a month, and Iron Man has the magical ability to x-ray him and cauterize the wound so that he is healthy enough to take part in the rest of the story without a problem…Tony decides that if given the opportunity, he would do everything exactly the same; maybe Cap should have questioned him more before granting absolution…wait, the good guys reach Berlin from Italy after an hour’s walk? It’s a small world after all...battle, battle, chaos…Vision, the Cosmic Cube’s nanny, encourages the Red Skull to unleash his imagination—whose side is this guy on?...then behold, Roy Thomas gave the writers a list of Golden Age villains to include (some of which he’d made up himself) and they crammed them all into a double page spread…so-- battle, battle, chaos!

Comments: No inkers are credited for the series. Thor’s only appearance in this series is as a villain in an alternate timeline.

The villains, as Peter suggests, are all from Roy Thomas' run of Invaders. Master Man, a Nazi Super-Soldier, was their 1st foe in Giant-Size #1. Atlantean U-Man surfaced in #4, and vampire Baron Blood in #7. #16's Warrior Woman was a female version of Master Man. Armoured Iron Cross arrived in #36. But before then Hitler had temporarily persuaded Thor to help the Nazis in #32. But Thor understood his mistake in #33, so I don't know how come Thor's back on their side here - except the Cosmic Cube can do anything.

Avengers / Invaders #11 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Spitfire and Union Jack sacrifice their lives to allow the soldiers to get away from the Dogs of War with the wounded Paul Anselm but they are under siege by more of the mechanical monsters. Suddenly the Invaders and the Avengers (disguised as various contemporary heroes) arrive on the scene and rout the Dogs. Paul apologizes for messing everything up but they need him to correct it; Iron Man applies first aid to stop the bleeding and they depart (with Tony and Bucky talking about heroism and stuff)….

The Human Torch and Toro arrive in a devastated Germany: the place is in ruins because the Red Skull’s rage has been unleashed; there they battle more Dogs of War. The combined heroes arrive and fight a regiment of soldiers magically summoned by the Skull. Badgered by the Vision (guardian of the Cosmic Cube), the Red Skull calls up a team of Nazi superheroes (Baron Blood, Iron Cross, Master Man, U-Man, Warrior Woman, and Thor—yes, that Thor) and the battle is joined in earnest….
