Avenging Spider-Man #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro
As the story opens, Spider-Man is agonizing over his busy and confusing schedule while the Avengers are battling A.I.M. and their giant robot. His more powerful teammates vanquish the mechanical monster and after the confrontation is over, he asks for a lift back to New York. Since everyone refuses before Red Hulk realizes what they are doing, he ends up elected to carry Spidey back to his hometown. As the crimson giant bounds across the country, Spidey tries to joke with him but finds him even more humorless than the green one. As they approach the George Washington Bridge, they find the city in turmoil: at the start of the New York Marathon, a swarm of Moloids erupted from their underground lair and attacked the runners, carrying off Mayor J. Jonah Jameson. When the Moloid leader spies the two heroes, he blows on a whistle and summons a giant monster with rows of teeth and multiple serpent-like tongues to swallow Spidey and Red. The creature secretes some sort of toxin which drugs to two Avengers into a coma. Far underground, Jameson comes face-to-face with the Mole Man, who dispatched his Moloids to capture him. The Mole Man, mistaking Jameson for the King of New York, is seeking his help against…and then it becomes clear that the Mole Man is in chains, at the mercy of his conquerors, an army of fearsome warriors from the Earth’s depths….
