Black Widow: Deadly Origin #3 Review by (May 12, 2012)
This series was published during Dark Reign/Siege and is set early in Dark Reign. Tony Stark is missing because he is the World's Most Wanted man, in the storyline I'm about to start synopsizing over in the Iron Man library (plug). This story has to happen before Black Widow gets dragged into that story in Iron Man (2008) #14. It seems that the nanites don't make her immediate contacts want to kill Natasha. But they then get passed on to further intimate contacts, and make the 2nd generation contactees want to kill their 'sire' (to use a modern vampire analogy). Hence Mockingbird attacked Clint Barton, and Hercules gets mobbed. Presumably the infection doesn't spread beyond the 2nd generation. Natasha's relationship with Hawkeye ran from Tales of Suspense #57 to Avengers #76. Then came her partnership with Daredevil in DD#81-124, followed immediately by the Champions series where she met Hercules.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Black Widow: Deadly Origin #3 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Driven insane by the Icepick Protocol, Bobbi (Mockingbird) Morse is attempting to kill her husband Clint Barton when the Black Widow burst through a window and disarms her. Natasha explains how she has passed nanites on to everyone she was ever close to and must kiss her as the quickest way to inject her with counter-nanites. She explains to an irritated Clint that Tony Stark is missing and many old friends are dead by violence because they were close to her….

The next stage of the Black Widow’s history is her rocky relationship with Daredevil; her mentor and father figure Ivan Petrovich disapproves hoping that she would have turned to him, not an American superhero, for closure. This brings her to the present, where she passes along the anti-nanites to DD, who takes his leave, still bitter at her leaving him, as Ivan was….

She seeks solace with James Barnes as the former Winter Soldier was rendered immune to the nanites during his Soviet training. Natasha then gets a call from Hercules, who is being swarmed by a murderous mob of his ex-lovers. She recalls the good times she had with him while they were members of the short-lived Champions, as she rushes to save the lives of Herc’s lady friends. To express his gratitude he points the way into the sky as the direction her enemy lies in….

She approaches Nick Fury about gaining the launch codes for a H.A.M.M.E.R. spacecraft And he hands them over as a favor to the woman who saved his life as well as being a former head of the Avengers—even though that was frowned upon by Ivan all those years ago—and she launches herself into space. When she nears her goal she recognizes it for what it is: a Soviet-era dreadnought, and the man in control is a cyborg version of Ivan Petrovich….
