Synopsis

Black Widow (2016 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Maria Hill announces to SHIELD personnel that Black Widow is now to be considered an enemy of SHIELD and must be apprehended at any cost—and then Natasha comes dashing through the office, fighting off those trying to capture her. She smashes through a wall into a staff kitchen area, still struggling to get free. An Agent gets the drop on her and she sets off a small explosive and leaps through a window…

…of the Helicarrier. An Agent takes off in a flying car while two more Agents with jet packs follow. As Natasha plummets toward New York City, she enters the flying car and hits the eject button, sending the Agent hurtling across the sky. She approaches one jet pack guy and deactivates his flying device. She cuddles up close to the other jet pack guy, giving his helmet a kiss and yanking his parachute cord, sending him away while she holds onto his jet pack. As they approach the ground, he fires at her, exploding the jet pack and she cartwheels in the air, bounces off a car roof and onto a motorcycle which she drives away, the flying car in pursuit. The driver fires at her and as they leave the city she hurls a small bomb at him and it detonates, blowing them both up. Natasha pulls herself from the mud and watches the car burn. The Agent comes up behind her and holds a gun to her head. They fight for it, he says, “Whatever you pinched from us, I hope it was worth it” and she bashes him in the head with a rock, saying, “Me too.”

Black Widow (2016 series) #1 Review by (March 4, 2026)

Review: Now that’s a way to start a series off with a bang and following it with a pure adrenaline rush of an issue-long chase scene, into a fiery red conclusion. And it makes for a wild contrast with BW’s previous series, the Nathan Edmondson/Phil Noto run with the lowkey drama and realistic art that may have been a little too dreary and understated. So here we have a more action-oriented series with C. Samnee’s more cartoonish art which suits the standard comic book look and generally looks like it’s going to be a lot more fun. Oh and why is SHIELD after Natasha? Check out the next issue….

Comments: Mark Waid credited as co-scripter. Marvel Database identifies the female who gets the drop on Natasha as Emily Preston; she is a regular in DEADPOOL (2013) and DEADPOOOL (2016); this is a rare appearance outside of Deadpool’s orbit. Issue includes a missive from the editor and creative team on the origin of this title.
