Matt Murdock is awoken at his typewriter by Foggy Nelson, having fallen asleep in the process of writing out his will. Foggy suggests Matt take some time off and Matt mentions his planned trip to Japan. Down in a cab, Foggy realizes that he forgot to mention that one of the cops from the death squad a couple issue ago had escaped but figures it can wait until morning. However, said escapee arrives just as Matt is leaving, hoping to pay him back for, as he sees it, setting them up to get nabbed by Daredevil. He lobs a lit stick of dynamite at Matt who senses it just in time to bat it away. Though he prevented himself from being killed, Matt is still sent to the hospital with a concussion. Foggy is called in the middle of the night and rushes over, but is unable to dissuade Matt from heading out for Japan.

On the plane ride over, Matt thinks about various points in his history that have brought him to this point; meeting Elektra, her death at Bullseye’s hands, and himself putting Bullseye in traction. Matt finally lands and after getting situated, he heads for the docks, hoping to catch the ship Bullseye’s on as it’s arriving. On the way, he’s accosted by three street punks looking to rob him and he effortlessly deals with them. Just then, the Osama Maru comes into port and Matt switches to Daredevil and sneaks aboard. He searches the ship for Bullseye but instead finds a woman chained to the wall in a room. She says she can tell him where Bullseye is, and he frees her before dealing with the guard that came to check things out.

Daredevil and the woman make their way through the ship and Daredevil ends up having to contend with even more guards. Once he’s taken care of all of them, Daredevil has an odd flash of Bullseye, almost feeling as if he was Bullseye, and attributes the odd feeling to his concussion. The woman reveals that Bullseye is not on the ship, and they are surrounded by yet more guards. Daredevil deals with them and the woman jumps from the ship into the water, with Daredevil quickly following. They swim to shore, where the woman finally introduces herself as Yuriko and the two decide to rest in a nearby rice shop. Yuriko tells Daredevil that Bullseye was taken off the ship en route, to an island off the coast of Hokkaido. There, Lord Dark Wind explains his plans to Bullseye, to reconstruct his spine aided by prayer to his warrior god. Back at the shop, Yuriko tells Daredevil of Lord Dark Wind and how he was a kamikaze pilot in World War II who miraculously survived, and needs Bullseye for a scheme he has, to atone for this disgrace. Daredevil and the shopkeeper quickly deal with more goons, when Daredevil asks Yuriko why she’s been hiding her face. She then reveals that the left side of her face has been horribly marked! To be continued!

Daredevil (1964 series) #197 Review by (September 3, 2025)

Review: Daredevil heads to Japan in order to stop Bullseye from being restored to full health! Before that, there’s an odd section in which one of the death squad cops from a couple issues ago tries to kill Matt with a stick of dynamite (weird weapon choice) that feels like it’s only here to establish Matt’s concussion. Otherwise, it doesn’t add much. In Japan, on the boat from last issue (my there are a lot of boats in Daredevil issues lately), Daredevil meets a helpful woman named Yuriko who is able to point him in the right direction and provide him with information. It’s actually Yuriko who ends up being the most significant thing about this issue given that this is actually Yuriko Oyama who later on becomes Lady Deathstrike, a notable enemy of Wolverine! They just missed each other by one issue. That’s yet another important contribution for Wolverine’s history that happens to be in a Daredevil issue. The new artist isn’t quite as striking as Klaus Janson but still serviceable (including some of Mike Mignola’s earliest work, inking just this issue). Other than that, this was a solid enough continuation from last issue, mostly comprised of decent action sequences and a bunch of exposition.

Comments: First appearance of Yuriko Oyama. Though Klaus Janson and Larry Hama provided the art for the first six pages, newcomer William Johnson, along with Mike Mignola provide the art for the rest of the issue. At one point, the Japanese city of Hokkaido is mentioned, incorrectly spelled Hokkido.
