Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #237 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Daredevil tracks down a couple of thieves and quickly takes them out before telling them to stay clear of Hell’s Kitchen! Daredevil is then approached by the Black Widow, saying she’s worried about him after all his trouble with Fisk recently. She can’t believe that he’s actually satisfied with his life right now and comes to him with a proposition. Turns out the wife of a Florida Senator named Barbara Whalen wants her and other superheroes to publicly make statements against drugs, allowing themselves to be administered tests proving they’re drug free, in the same way that professional athletes do. Daredevil thinks the whole thing is unconstitutional, having to prove your innocence, and questions how far the government wants to intrude on citizens’ public lives. When Daredevil clarifies that he combats drugs among the pushers, rather than the users, Natasha makes a crack about Karen that causes Matt to storm off. Matt returns to his flat and to Karen, both of them content with the bit of normalcy they’ve achieved.

Meanwhile, Natasha returns to her place and makes a call to Whalen telling her that Daredevil said no. While Natasha plans to tackle the issue more directly, Whalen states she’ll look for other heroes to endorse her campaign. Later, Matt and Karen finish up dinner at a restaurant and Karen reveals that she’ll be looking for another secretarial job soon. As they walk home, Matt suddenly hears something and ushers Karen down a side alley, telling her to run. Matt stays behind and changes to Daredevil, soon coming face to face with the villain Klaw! Klaw aims to get his reputation back and attacks Daredevil! Daredevil fights back but finds his attacks largely ineffective, getting royally zapped by a force field of sound that Klaw puts up. Daredevil tries to gain some distance by climbing up a fire escape, and tries to think of what little he knows about Klaw.

Klaw sends a panther made of solid sound after DD, glad when he puts up a credible fight. Turns out Klaw targeted Daredevil due to being relatively small time, assuming he’d be an easy victory! Daredevil takes offense to this and ends up tackling Klaw off a roof. Daredevil dodges another blast from Klaw, allowing him to enter a nearby electronics store. There, he uses a tone generator and adjusts the frequency in order to disrupt Klaw’s own frequency, taking him out! Later, Matt describes the whole thing to Karen and admits that he’d been having doubts. Having been looking just at how far they’d come, instead of outward towards their new life, Matt and Karen are both determined to make the best of this second chance they have.

Daredevil (1964 series) #237 Review by (May 27, 2026)

Review: This one is kind of weird, essentially split into two halves that have nothing to do with each other. The first half of the issue involves Black Widow coming to Daredevil with a proposition from the wife of a Senator. She wants superheroes to publicly take tests proving they’re drug free, in the same way professional athletes do, and for some reason she came to Natasha first. Daredevil thinks the whole thing is unconstitutional and it essentially devolves into a debate about big government. It’s very odd. Something else I don’t love, the issue frames the beautiful “I didn’t lose a thing” moment between Matt and Karen from part 6 of Born Again as a self-deception on Matt’s part that he has to get over, which feels like it completely missed the point of that moment. And oh yeah, Daredevil fights Klaw too. He shows up completely out of nowhere (and, for the issue’s biggest question, how does DD know his costume is red??) Looking to regain his reputation, he targets Daredevil because he’s relatively small time (which DD takes offense to). Obviously, a sound-based villain proves dangerous to a guy with sensitive hearing but DD is able to turn it to his advantage like always. It’s not a terrible issue, it’s just disjointed and underwhelming. The Widow/drugs/Senator’s wife thing goes absolutely nowhere, barely mentioned again, and the fight with Klaw is rather random and unspectacular. The art is pretty nice though, saving the issue from being too low.

Comments: First time Daredevil encounters Klaw.
