Synopsis

Dungeons of Doom (2026 series) #2 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

In the collapse of the ground surrounding Doctor Doom’s castle in Latveria, several parties fell into Doom’s dungeons….

Red Hulk is crashing around, trying to link up with the American troops down there. Those soldiers are in a lab where the recorded voice of Charles Xavier warns them of a mutant who should not have been born. Hanging from the ceiling by chains is a limbless head and torso; a soldier shines a light on it and a light within the body responds and the body starts to writhe and speak in an unknown language. The commander cuts it down, despite the protests of the soldiers, and as the thing lies on the floor the head separates from the body. The thing emits a bright light and sound that possesses the Sergeant Major, filling his head with visions of a cloaked figure commanding an army and combatting Professor X and Emma Frost. The troops resume contact with Red Hulk but the Sergeant Major speaks in an unknown language and starts killing the other men. Then he levitates into the air and his body bursts open. Another vision of the cloaked figure. “Oh no.”

Wakandan secret agent Umbra stands in the eye of a massive Doom statue. He uses echolocation to discover what is below him in the dark, spouts wings and flies down. He comes to a door, kills the man guarding it, blows the door open. Inside on a pedestal at the center of a large room, he finds a skull-shaped plant. A voice says, “The heart-shaped herb allows you to travel to the ancestral plane. The skull-shaped herb brings the ancestral plane to our world.” It tells him that his wife can live again and his controller, the giant bat named Nagiku, has him eat the herb….

A group of Hydra agents has found a giant hammer called “Sviksemi” but only Valence can pick it up; he uses it to smash open the locked door. The agents fall to arguing over who should have the hammer but Valence insists it is his. Valence walks through the open door and is fired upon from the dark and wounded. Agent Manx tries to lift the hammer but he cannot. Valens mocks his pretentions so Manx smashes Valence’s head in with a rock. And now Manx can lift Sviksemi….

To escape a grisly monster, the Latverian freedom fighters have followed Aleksander as he has dived into a water-filled tomb at the example of the spirit of his murdered sister. They make it out through giant faucets into a temple dedicated to Konshu. Borys was injured in the escape so Aleksander waves Sofia and Fedir on while he, at his sister’s urging, cuts Borys’ throat. In the next room, Sofia has taken the Eye of Konshu from a huge idol and it has given her the ability to see the secrets inside each one. She glances at Fedir and knows what dark things he has done but she comforts him. Aleksander arrives and Sofia knows he has killed Borys. His sister’s ghost tells Aleksander to kill the others and he and Fedir draw on one another, Aleksander against his will. Sofia holds them apart as Borys, now transformed into a tentacled eye monster, enters the chamber….

Dungeons of Doom (2026 series) #2 Review by (February 18, 2026)

Review: An intriguing but incredibly violent and gory multistrand story with multiple creative teams at work continues to show us the horrors of Doom’s dungeons. To be honest I had a lot of trouble following what was going on in the mutant story so the synopsis is a bit more speculative than usual. None of the four tales looks like it will be complete in only one more issue but that’s what they are promising so we’ll have to see if they can stick the landing. In its favor, none of the stories has an obvious ending ahead either. And the only familiar character in the story, Red Hulk, barely appears and has nothing to do with the rest of the issue. See you in thirty!

Comments: Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Benjamin Percy. Multiple artists involved: Justin Mason, Robert Gill, Carlos Magno, Georges Jeanty, and Karl Story.
