Giant-Size Hulk (2006 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The President of the United States is coming to UCLA to honor the Champions for their part in freeing the world from the hypnotic control of Doctor Doom. The Secret Service is trying to ensure safety while Hercules rattles Agent Spooner with his insistence that the Service is not needed because Hercules himself is enough. The rest of the team (Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Angel, Iceman, and Darkstar) arrive to offer to help Spooner. The agent has just received a Code: Jade, a possible sighting of Bruce Banner, and asks them to handle it. Angel flies over the highway to find whether it is indeed Banner in a particular car; he is greeted by Hulk smashing out of the car and contacts the rest of the team. He is told to stall Hulk until the others can get there. Angel tries so Hulk hurls a car door at him, knocking him through the window of a church, interrupting a wedding. Hulk remembers what he was doing so he picks up the car. The Champions arrive. Iceman freezes Hulk in a block of ice which works for about two seconds. Ghost Rider’s blast of Hellfire misses. Black Widow sprays tear gas in Hulk’s eyes while Herc pummels him. Hulk kicks Herc away so Natasha coordinates the team in an attack. Hulk, angry now, puts down the car and slams his fists into the ground until no one is moving. He then picks up the car and leaps away. Angel follows to discover Hulk landing at the ER to Cedar-Sinai hospital, taking a woman out of the car and handing her to the medicos; she tells them she is having an attack of appendicitis….

Later, the Champions visit the woman who explains she is Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin; they were out for a drive when, stuck in traffic, she began to experience pain. The crisis caused Bruce to Hulk out and rush her to the hospital. Herc wants to know why Hulk didn’t tell them…a frosty Jen responds, “Did you ask?”

Giant-Size Hulk (2006 series) #1 Review by (April 15, 2026)

Review: First story: An enjoyable tale, pitting Hulk against that forgotten and forgettable superhero team, the original Champions. It’s an amusing tale with a nice moral lesson at the end, especially for Hercules who takes it to heart. Another nice vignette from Peter David, though he clearly forgets Darkstar is on the scene. And this fight is taking place in a traffic jam on a highway yet none of the drivers seems to panic or try to flee, even after Hulk starts destroying cars. I’m wondering whether this story had a hidden death toll. The art is also a bit underwhelming, good in the layout and broad strokes but the artists have a little trouble with faces.

Second story: Greg Pak is one of the great Hulk writers but this tale suffers from familiarity: how often have we seen Hulk and Banner at each other’s throats in their shared mindscape. But the art is great and the writing exceptional. It’s just that…well, you know….

Comments: Story one: Story takes place after the events of CHAMPIONS (1975) #16; Hercules’ confusion as to the President’s name is a joke: The original tale took place during the Carter Administration but this story is set while Bill Clinton is President. “The events of this story is the catalyst that leads to the formation of the Renegades during the WORLD WAR HULK crisis as seen in INCREDIBLE HULK #106-111" according to Marvel Database.

Story two: Takes place between INCREDIBLE HULK (2000) #95-96. Heroes in Hulk’s dream include Thor, Sentry, Nick Fury, Thing, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Dr. Strange, Namor, Wolverine.
