Synopsis

Mortal Thor, The (2025 series) #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Story continues from THE IMMORTAL THOR #25.

A television program features an interview with a scholar promoting a show about myths and origins. The host asks about the leading Avenger Beta Ray Bill and the professor suggests that he may have borrowed from the mythical hero Thor. While this is playing, Sigurd Jarlson shocks himself on his hotplate. He leaves for work and encounters his neighbor Kris, explaining once again his problem with amnesia after a violent incident he can’t remember but he has an apartment and needs to find a job. Outside, they meet Lukki, a mischievous street kid of indeterminate gender and an odd sense of humor. Lukki wins five dollars from Kris with a riddle she can’t guess (the answer is “a lie”). Sigurd vaguely recalls experience as a construction worker and answers an ad Kris finds a bit shady….

Roxxon is recruiting construction workers but when the crowd discovers they will be strikebreakers, some turn away. Sigurd spots a tough guy with a familiar rune tattoo; the guy tells him it’s the rune for Thor, his hero (implying a White Supremacy association). Sigurd doesn’t think that’s right. When Sigurd understands the position of the strikers, he declines the job, making a speech about human dignity. A lot of the other applicants leave with Sigurd so the boss sends a trio of toughs to shut him up….

Sigurd encounters the three punks in an alley and assault him. Sigurd reaches for his hammer and beats the men bloody. He tells the guy with the Thor tattoo to tell all his friends that Thor is coming….

Review / Commentaries

Mortal Thor, The (2025 series) #1 Review by (August 27, 2025)

Review: So the amnesiac Thor explains the premise of the book, then he makes a heroic speech and beats up some bad guys. Looks like he’s being set up as a vigilante hero but this is Al Ewing, it’s rarely clear where things are going. Pasqual Ferry gives it a dark gritty look, especially in the violent sequence but, as with all of Al Ewing’s stuff, it’s the journey, not the destination.

Comments: First appearance of Kris. Al Ewing contributes a closing essay, introducing this new Thor title, calling it IMMORTAL THOR #26, MIGHTY THOR #787, and THE MORTAL THOR #1. Pascual Ferry was previously Thor artist for Matt Fraction’s run in THOR (2009) #615-620. Issue includes a tribute to the late Peter David, comic book writer responsible for much of the Hulk’s later history.
