A Merry Tale of Asgard

Synopsis

Mortal Thor, The (2025 series) #4 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

In Asgard, after the death of Thor, King and All-Father, the citizens slowly return to normal, with Magni Thorson and his sidekick Blackjack O’Hare are having a good time at a feat with the Warriors Four. Balder enters, approving of their actions, as in this darkened time one must lighten the mood, understandable as Magni has lost a father. But Magni barely knew the Thor of this time and place, and they all must mourn the All-Father. Amora the Enchantress arrives to claim that Magni must take the throne as Thor’s son. But Magni reiterates his distance from Thor, being a relative stranger to the realm, suggesting Balder, Thor’s brother, has a better claim. But Balder backs off, claiming he suspects trouble in Hel that would need his attention. He calls for a new Census of Realms to determine where all the players are at any given time but only the All-Father can commission one. Amora lists Odin’s other children, none of whom has close ties to Asgard. Magni stops the debate by noting that the All-Father must have the All-Power and the fact that it has not passed on to him is the final answer. Amora ponders….

But a Troll spy, Pebbledash, has been listening in and he burrows back to his realm to inform King Ulik that Thor’s son does not sit on the throne of Asgard. Ulik covets the throne, recalling how he once sat on it disguised as Tanarus and wishing he had a magician to change him back. No sooner said…Amora appears to offer just that and with minimal bargaining, she transforms Ulik back into Tanarus….

In Asgard, Sif worries over her brother Heimdall, no longer dead but still recovering from the malady. Magni stops by and she confirms they are haranguing him to take the throne. Yet he does not trust the cold and violent Thor who raised him. If he could be Thor he would travel the world righting wrongs and having adventures. Then his mother Amora appears to him, claiming to be a captive of the Trolls, calling on him to rescue his poor mother. Both Magni and Blackjack are suspicious of her overacting but they decide to investigate….

Entering the caverns of the Trolls, Magni and Blackjack are waylaid by enemies and easily clobber them. Then Tanarus arrives to attack Magni with the Thor-Force. But the fact that he is not dead causes Magni to conclude that he must have the All-Power within him and he fires back, defeating Ulik whose disguise is dropped. But to everyone’s surprise, Magni offers Ulik the hand of friendship, inviting him to dinner in Asgard. Amora reveals herself and Magni realizes that was part of her plan. Ulik considers punishing her for her treachery but Blackjack painfully reminds him to quit while he is ahead. Amora suggest he take the throne now, he says he will consider it and there is a grand feat in Asgard, shared by the Aesir and the Trolls, which takes some getting used to but it all goes well…especially from Amora’s standpoint….

Mortal Thor, The (2025 series) #4 Review by (November 26, 2025)

Review: Meanwhile in Asgard…. This issue leaves Thor in jail while we see the situation in Asgard now that Thor is considered dead and it’s full of the usual heroes and villains and teachery to come. Yes, this tale, lacking anyone who appeared in the first three issues, sets up some future stories. Very nice and comparatively non-violent, we see Amora’s craftiness, Ulik’s lack thereof, and the naivety of Magni who has just been pushed by his canny mother into the position of All-Father. And we have Blackjack O’Hare as an offbeat resident of Asgard.

Comments: Magni, Son of Thor, first appeared in THOR (1998) #68-79 and returned in IMMORTAL THOR #17-19; his reality is called Earth-3515. Blackjack O’Hare was introduced in INCREDIBLE HULK #271 (along with Rocket Raccoon), then ROCKET RACCOON #1-4; he met Thor in IMMORTAL THOR ANNUAL #1 and IMMORTAL THOR #19. Ulik ruled Asgard in the guise of Tanarus in MIGHTY THOR (2011) #8-12. Heimdall was killed by Bullseye in VALKYRIE: JANE FOSTER #1 and rescued by Thor and company in IMMORTAL THOR #24. Hogun’s reference to a Zeppo, the moderating influence of a wacky foursome, is Zeppo Marx, the “normal” member of the four Marx Brothers of classic film comedy.
