Secret Avengers #12 Review by (March 26, 2024)

Review: Well, as expected, things are going very badly for Mockingbird: first, she was trapped on A.I.M. Island without a clue as to what she was supposed to be doing, either as a Secret Avenger or the man she was impersonating. And now her cover’s blown and things will be getting worse because the story arc’s title spells it out for us. And the arrival of MODOK never leads to anything good. Nice start to the series’ final arc, wrapping up the story of how SHIELD used mind wiping tech to control the good guys.

Comments: Title is a loose pun on To Kill a Mockingbird, novel by Harper Lee and classic film adaptation. Story follows from the end of issue #8.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Secret Avengers #12 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

At Barbuda (A.I.M. Island), Mockingbird, amnesiac and undercover as scientist Harry Bainbridge, has unexpectedly been called to give a progress report to the A.I.M. High Council (Graviton, Taskmaster, Mentallo, Superia, Jude the Entropic Man), She presents a lot of doubletalk, explaining nothing and asking for an extension of two more days. She thinks she has gotten away with it until the Scientist Supreme (Andrew Forson) reveals that he knows who she is and has her taken to an interrogation cell….

Aboard the SHIELD Helicarrier Iliad, Agent Phil Coulson brings some surprising news to Director Maria Hill: some high-ranking A.I.M. personnel want to surrender. A group of A.I.M. scientists arrive, explaining that their leader (not Andrew Forson) will arrive only when the sees that SHIELD has let the scientists go. They hand over a list of six A.I.M. bases developing secret weaponry. They ask to be allowed to join with SHIELD as Nazi scientists had gone to work for the US government after the War. To show good faith, Hill is offered the location of Medusa, the underwater base where Forson’s black guard are trained….

At A.I.M. Island, the High Council are concerned that Forson knew of Mockingbird’s secret identity and didn’t tell them, which some consider a reckless move. Meanwhile, Forson interrogates Bobbi who confesses to remembering nothing. As Taskmaster is polishing TESS-One, he is contacted by Coulson, telling him it is time to get off the island. On the beach, Jude senses that Mentallo is uncertain of the company’s goals and his place therein….

Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury Jr. enter A.I.M.’s Medusa base. Hawkeye is attacked by Shang-Chi (later revealed to be an Adaptoid) and captured. Elsewhere on the base, Fury and Natasha are captured by a squad of soldiers led by Yelena Belova, now the Super-Adaptoid….

Aboard the Iliad, the leader of the defecting A.I.M. agents arrive: MODOK….
