Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #14 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Thanos, having shanghaied five villains and transported them to the planet Ha’arg to kidnap the Oracle of Ancient Knowledge from his monastery, has taken the Oracle and abandoned his secret defenders to the wrath of the monks. So Geatar, Nitro, Rhino, Super-Skrull, and Titanium Man are fighting their way to their ship, Nitro being on the point of death. They reach the ship and discover that Thanos wasn’t lying when he told them he had destroyed the craft. Super-Skrull tries to create a force field to protect them but he is knocked out by a bullet from one of the monks. Titanium Man has a suggestion: he can repair the ship’s escape pod and propel it into space with the others aboard—but his power will be depleted and they will drift. Geatar tells him to go ahead as there are no other options. As Geatar and Rhino hold off the enemy, T-Man fixes up the pod, they board and take off. They drift through space, the oxygen soon running out and Geatar is the last to lose consciousness…

…and then they awaken to find themselves on an asteroid, facing Silver Surfer and Legacy. Surfer explains that he picked up their distress signal and brought them to this asteroid and provided it with an oxygen atmosphere. But Geatar is angry at the Surfer having captured his captain Nebula and shoots him with a ray blast. But he recovers quickly to stop escalation of hostilities. Surfer intends to take Geatar to Titan to face justice. He heals the injured villains. Nitro deduces from his name and costume who Legacy is and takes perverse delight in shaking Legacy’s hand. The hero doesn’t know what to make of it [Nitro recognized Legacy as the son of the hero he killed, Captain Mar-Vell]. Super-Skrull flames on, intending to prevent Silver Surfer from taking Geatar away but the latter insists it is all right so Skrull flies off to rejoin his people. Legacy agrees to take Geatar back to Titan. Surfer offers to take the three Earth baddies back home but Nitro demurs, saying he would rather take the escape pod and explore the universe. Surfer finds this plan dubious but allows him to go….

Legacy returns Geatar to Titan and he is placed in a cell with Nebula while the Silver Surfer heads for Earth with two passengers….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #14 Review by (July 1, 2025)

Review: A more entertaining issue than it had any right to be, focusing as it does on a band of villains betrayed by a bigger villain. The escape from Ha’arg is exciting, the art including several cinematic touches to create tension. The encounter with Silver Surfer just wraps up the story and moves the players to where they can be easily found when the next writer wants to use them. So, pretty cool issue, wrapping up the most offbeat story arc of the series.

Comments: Part three of three parts. Rhino is next seen in WAR MACHINE #1, Nitro in COSMIC POWERS #4, Super-Skrull in FANTASTIC FOUR #400, Titanium Man in CAPTAIN AMERICA/NICK FURY: BLOOD TRUCE, and Geatar has not appeared since then, as of 2025.
