Synopsis

Ultimate Iron Man II (2008 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars

Tony Stark is recovering from the explosion during the battle with terrorists, waiting for his legs and arm to regrow. Everyone is assuming that Tony’s giant armor was actually a robot, which is fine. Si Ma shows him a report that identifies Mark Scott of Whiplash, Inc. as the one who hired the terrorists….

Elsewhere, Scott meets with Dolores, Spanish for “pain,” the diminutive villain who hired him to kill Howard Stark, rebuking Scott for botching the job, by not knowing Stark was in prison and his terrorists’ failure to escape….

Recovered, Tony returns to the office to meet with a pair of government agents who want his giant robot. He reminds them that the giant one was destroyed but he has a regular size one. Tony takes them to the Baxter Building Think Tank and asks for Obadiah Stane, leaving him to be intimidated by the government men while he consults with Rhodey and Nifara, who are working on metal gauntlets with concealed blades. When he returns, he finds that Obadiah has gone but he was scared out of his mind, which was Tony’s intent. So Tony persuades the government men to accept his prototype for a mission to wipe out a terrorist training camp….

Tony visits his father in prison and Howard tells him he miscalculated, that Obadiah now knows that Tony is scared. And does he knows the government’s real motives?

So Tony prepares to don the Iron Man armor for the government mission and discovers that Rhodey is going with him in the War Machine armor as back-up. The next day, Nifara accompanies the “robots” to the government men and it musses them up a little by way of letting them know they are dangerous. She also warns them that Stark will know everything the robots do, whether the g-men have tampered with them, and what to do if they are reported lost….

Obadiah reports to Dr. Molekevic that Stark has been threatening him, plotting to steal his research, tricking Molekevic into pulling some strings for him….

Tony and Rhodey are taken to the Mideast in an aircraft carrier and outfitted with weapons before being put in a helicopter with a team of soldiers and sent to their target area….

Si Ma visits Howard Stark in prison and he fires her for letting Tony put himself in danger. She reminds him that she works for Tony, not for him, and he should know Tony never listens….

The “robots” are sent in the direction of their target and kill every fighter in sight who are trying to destroy them. Then they encounter a little boy who is wired with explosives. Tony rips them off and the boy begs them not to shoot his father. They enter the bunker to find two men fighting—but which one is the boy’s father?

Ultimate Iron Man II (2008 series) #1 Review by (July 3, 2026)
Comments: This series is no longer considered canon because of conflicts with THE ULTIMATES and has been retconned as a fictional Japanese anime version, designated Earth-55921. First appearances of Iron Man and War Machine. First appearance of Whiplash (Mark Scott) and Dolores. Sole appearance of Dr. Molekevic, whose design and name evoke the Mole Man. Virtual Calligraphy contributed to the lettering.

Review: Okay, we’re back! And so is Orson Scott Card with Ultimate Tony Stark, picking up the story where it left off. And we finally get to see Ultimate Iron Man! And he's got a round head and round eyes and looks like a bug! Once we get over the surprise that the first appearance of the title hero is in a sequel because the author spent all of this time on a five-issue biography of his alter ego, this is an okay follow-up (it had to be or else we wouldn’t see Iron Man at all). The sense of wonder from the first miniseries is toned way down because this one is largely watching all of the parties from the first part plotting against each other with Howard Stark’s role being cut down and Obadiah Stane’s being pumped up which just should not be. And we still have nearly every character speaking constantly in dry humor, and more battles with snark than with any other weapon. It’s still entertaining but Iron Man isn’t the most interesting part of ULTIMATE IRON MAN.
