Synopsis

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #218 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

In Rio Diablo, New Mexico, Alex Summers and Lorna Dane are taking a leisurely drive when suddenly they’re run off the road by an oncoming bus! They tumble down the slope, landing upside down, having been saved by their seat belts. A huge rock comes falling toward them and Alex blasts it apart. Later, they inspect the damage, and their groceries, and Lorna reconstitutes the damaged truck with their magnetic powers. They drive off, wondering what that was all about. Elsewhere, back in Scotland, Dazzler awakens to find herself in pitch darkness. She generates a little bit of light and realizes that she’s been buried alive! Trying not to panic, she assesses the situation and realizes that Juggernaut must have thought she died when they fought last issue. She realizes she’s not buried far, with rocks covering her like a cairn, giving her some room to breathe through the cracks. The faint sounds of nature help to refuel her powers and she starts to feel hopeful when suddenly she’s found by Psylocke’s psi-probe. Dazzler uses her remaining energy to send up a flare before passing out again.

Later, Dazzler awakens once more, this time with the sun shining on her face! Psylocke and Longshot hug her, overjoyed that she’s okay. Dazzler feels like she messed up big time and doesn’t belong with the X-Men, but Rogue points out that it comes with the job; they’ve all messed up at some point and that’s why they need each other to depend on. They then overhear a radio broadcast that Juggernaut is tearing up Edinburgh and head out to stop him. They reach the city and Psylocke directs Rogue through the chaos of the rampage to Juggernaut’s location. Rogue lands a huge punch on Juggernaut that shatters all of the windows in the area and he retaliates by hitting her across the town! Psylocke then drives a truck into Juggernaut which he easily stops, and tries assaulting him telepathically, managing to hurt him a bit even through his helmet! Longshot then distracts Juggernaut, dancing around his attacks until Juggy drops an entire building on him!

The others frantically try to dig Longshot out and soon find him in the rubble without a scratch! They praise his never-ending luck and decide to learn from Dazzler’s mistake last issue and actually try working as a team. They catch back up to Juggernaut and Rogue jumps on him, absorbing some of his power, the added strength being enough for her to rip his helmet off and hurl him into a train line. Longshot then notices a train coming, prompting Rogue to grab him to help deal with it. She drops Longshot off on the train, telling him to corral everyone to the back while she flies in front of it to stop it the hard way! Back in the ditch, Dazzler blinds Juggernaut as Rogue attempts to stop the train moving ever closer! Dazzler is able to remove Juggernaut’s skullcap, allowing Psylocke to take him out with a psychic blast. With Juggernaut defeated, they look up to find that Rogue managed to stop the train just in the nick of time!

Later, they help rebuild the train line, while Psylocke telepathically keeps anyone there from recognizing them. A job well done that they won’t get the credit for, as usual. The X-Men are then alerted by a Brigadier that Juggernaut’s rampage was apparently just a diversion while his partner Black Tom Cassidy robbed the Scotland bank! While they’re less than pleased at this revelation, they do feel proud that they’ve started to meld into a real team. Meanwhile, back in New Mexico, Havok and Polaris check out a campsite that they think the bus that hit them may have come from. They blast apart a ridge and discover the campers all dead, along with one of the alien creatures the Brood use for transportation! They realize that this means the Brood are likely on earth, which will spell trouble for the human race!

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #218 Review by (December 17, 2025)

Review: The scraps of the new X-Men team must come together to stop the Juggernaut! With Rogue being the only one to have been an X-Man for any real amount of time at this point, the new team has things stacked against them! I honestly really like this one, it’s probably one of my favorite X-Men vs. Juggernaut bouts! The action is cool, the teamwork is great, everyone gets something to do, and there are a ton of cute little artistic moments thrown in there. Rogue in particular gets a couple of standout moments, one of which when she absorbs Juggernaut’s power and throws him across town! Unlike everyone else she encounters, she can only absorb some of his power and he doesn’t get knocked out but it’s still awesome! She also has to stop a train with her bare (uh, gloved) hands! It doubles as a tense moment as it puts a timer on the rest of the X-Men’s fight with Juggernaut as the train gets ever closer. Also ends up kind of funny when she stops it just in the nick of time (“Ah’m getting too old for this”). Just a really fun issue. We also get some of Claremont’s typical long-running subplots, setting up a Brood story that won’t get paid off for nearly another 15 issues! The wait is sure worth it though!

Comments: The officer the X-Men talk to, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, is a reference to a character from Doctor Who. Marc Silvestri’s first issue as artist. First time someone, in this case Psylocke, is able to telepathically hurt Juggernaut through his helmet.
