Synopsis

Uncanny X-Men (2012 series) #16 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

Last issue the 5 X-Men with the Phoenix power (Colossus, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik and Sub-Mariner) left the Council meeting in Utopia to beard Mr Sinister in his lair, leaving the other 4 members of the Council (Danger, Magneto, Psylocke and Storm) to cool their heels. They don't like being benched and Magneto decides they should do something about it.

The 5 are in Sinister's replica of Victorian London (with futuristic add-ons) beneath Anchorage, Alaska fighting his multitude of clones. Inside Castle Sinister Grand Engineer Sinister VII supervises the attachment of 20 Cyclops clones to power a weapon. They fire their optic blasts simultaneously into a Ruby Converger which focuses them through a giant canon and the result smashes into Namor.

The real Cyclops calls the 5 into a mental assembly to lay out some tactics. They know that Sinister Prime will be in the Castle but if they kill him a new version will be activated. They need to destroy the civilisation around him. Scott Summers sends Emma to purge the surrounding countryside and Illyana Rasputin to magically stop anyone from escaping. Meanwhile he, Namor and Peter Rasputin will destroy the Creation Engines to stop any more Sinister clones being created.

As the 3 approach the Engines emplacement the battalions of 'rifle'men are joined by Marauder Spawn, who we learn are merged clones of the Marauders like Scalphunter. But Sinister-Prime knows that they are just more cannon fodder and activates another secret weapon. The hill that the Castle is built on is revealed to be really a clone of Krakoa, the Living Island. Another multi-Cyclops blast hits Subby again so Scott returns fire and destroys the cannon. But this is all a ploy to lure/aggravate the mutants to attack the Castle rather than the Creation Engines ...

... and it works because Colossus makes himself Krakoa-size to fight the 'island'. But he's surprised by a bunch of Gambit clones jumping from the Castle battlements to  use Remy LeBeau's power to turn anything into a bomb to make *themselves* bombs which explode all over him, knocking him down. A 2nd wave is then launched but Peter's sister Magik teleports in to send them all through her stepping discs to emerge in the Ruby Converger room, destroying it. She sets up a magic forcefield  to keep the riflemen's cosmic bullets out, so a cadre of Cannonball clones are sent rocketing in to explode on them. Impetuous Sub-Mariner flies straight through the Cannonballs and into the Castle where he finds Sinister. But behind him are the Madelyne Pryor clones with glowing eyes ...

... and outside Scott feels Namor vanish from his senses. He quickly checks on Emma who's being fired on by a field of wheat and menaced by red-eyed cows which explode, splattering her with meat. And then she's hit by bolts of energy and she too leaves the mental gestalt of the Phoenix 5. Magik tried to retreat and regroup with Colossus but they too are removed by Madelynes. Cyclops is now alone until 3 of them come for their (ex-)husband. They exchange energy blasts, there's an enormous explosion leaving a large crater. And in the middle Sinister and his Maddie-horde find fallen Scott.

In the distance Danger, Magneto, Psylocke and Storm survey the carnage.

Uncanny X-Men (2012 series) #16 Review by (February 21, 2026)
This is what used to be called a big battle issue. And it's a roller-coaster ride that was a dream to synopsize.

The original Madelyne Pryor met and married Scott Summers after Jean Grey/Phoenix died in X-Men #137, but he left her when Jean returned in X-Factor. She turned bad as the Goblin Queen and met Mr Sinister who explained in Uncanny X-Men #240 that he'd created her as a clone of Jean. Her story after that is a bit muddled but at this point she's dead. (But of course she'll be back.)

Meanwhile Sinister has created more of her clones and they seem to have taken out the Phoenix 5. So what can the merely superhuman other members of the X-Men Council do next issue?
