Synopsis

West Coast Avengers Vol.4 #9 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Ultron split himself into multiple copies each of which adopted a different philosophy, and 3 of them are in this series. The 1st wanted to be a hero and joined the team as 1 of their rehabilitating criminals. The 2nd called the One founded a cult which saved the lives of terminally ill humans by converting them to cyborgs. The 3rd flew to the Sun and returned as the Scorched retaining the original's hatred of humans. He attacked the One, destroyed his cathedral and made the cyborgs his hounds. Meanwhile parolee team member Blue Bolt returned to prison to discover that his new cell-mate is Flag-Smasher who seems to have a lot of supporters amongst the inmates and guards. FS used a threat against his father to force Tommy Watt to tamper with the WCA's computer system. But he heard about the Ultron attack and broke out of prison to save his father and help his team. However he was shot in the shoulder while escaping.

Wounded Blue Bolt is flying somewhere. The Los Angeles fire service is attending the burning cathedral. War Machine lies unconscious on the rubble, while underneath Spider-Woman is holding it up to protect her cyborg'd friend Meredith Love. She calls for help but only the Scorched responds. But he's too busy removing WM's faceplate and preparing to bash James Rhodes' face in, ignoring the pleas of the One's head on his shoulder. But the good Ultron attacks him and they exchange blows and philosophies. He gets the upper hand long enough to lift some of the debris off SW, but the Scorched interferes before he gets very far. Then Blue Bolt arrives and blasts the baddie with electricity. And good Ultron remote control's Rhodey's armour. They combine blasts to drive the Scorched off.

Our Ultron frees Jessica Drew and her friend. Jim Rhodes starts to come round. Ulty detects Iron Man buried under more rubble and by whirling drills down to get him. BB has collapsed and Rhodey spots his crudely-bandaged wound (BB explains how it wasn't Ultron that shot him). WM uses a magnet in his glove to extract the bullet from the shoulder and applies coagulant to the wound. Ultron frees IM (in his Silver Centurion armour). Firestar turns up from her alcoholism and PTSD therapy (and Tommy has to explain how he got shot again). And Wonder Man completes the team as he shows up in a very tight-fitting valet parking uniform. We see his explanation that an explosion last issue blew his costume off before landing him on top of a car in front of a hotel, so he had to borrow the valet parker's clothes.

Tommy now hands Ultron the USB that Flag-Smasher wanted him to plug into their computer. U detects that it also has a transmitter so the villain has probably heard what Watt said. Tommy panics because there's a sniper poised to kill his dad. Wonder Man promises to save him and leaves with a sonic boom. BB starts to collapse again but Angelica Jones holds him up. War Machine learns from orbiting satellites that U3 is at the Griffith Observatory. He flies there carrying Spider-Woman and Firestar does the same for Blue Bolt. But Tony Stark hangs back to talk to U1. He apologises for betraying his trust by devising a plan to kill him if necessary (the Wasp-gun in #6) and asks if it would work on U3? U1 doesn't think so. So Tony then offers to prove how much he now *does* trust U1. But they're interrupted by an urgent message from Rhodey.

At the Observatory they're fighting U3's cyborg 'hounds'. Ultron has grown much larger by absorbing many of them and the Avengers are trying to stop more joining him without killing them. Firestar creates a large wall of microwaves between the cyborgs and U3, and Blue Bolt electrifies it. But the pair are trapped inside with the robot. War Machine and Spider-Woman outside are joined by Iron Man and the good Ultron, and Firestar open a gap in the microwaves to let all 4 in. BB is given the honour of shouting "Avengers Assemble" as all 6 attack the foe atop the Observatory dome. IM prepares to fire. But bad Ultron generates a blade which pierces right through Tony's body.

West Coast Avengers Vol.4 #9 Review by (August 2, 2025)
It may be significant that the good Ultron isn't seen in the reaction shot to Iron Man getting stabbed. Especially as next issue's cover has the 2 merged.

And next issue seems to be the last of the series.
