Synopsis

Avengers, The (1963 series) #370 synopsis by reviewer T Vernon
Rating: 3.5 stars

Kro of the Deviants is working in a subterranean level of the Pentagon when a flaming Sersi, missing her right arm, crashes through the ceiling. She relates how the Avengers received a distress call from Lemuria, home of the Deviants in the South Pacific. Black Widow and Vision needed to deal with the disbanding of the West Coast Avengers, leaving the others (Captain America, Crystal, Black Knight, Hercules, Sersi, and the visiting Giant-Man) to head out on the mission. They launched a Quinjet underwater and entered the city through a hidden portal. They were almost immediately spotted by Deviants led by Karygmax and a fight broke out which ended swiftly when the Avengers had brain mines clapped to their heads, sapping their wills. Karygmax noted that they needed the mixed blood of Crystal (an Inhuman), Cap (peak human), Hercules (Greek god), and Sersi (Elemental) for a special purpose. Black Knight and Giant-Man were sent to the arena. The priestess Varua was summoned to collect the blood but Sersi ripped off the brain mine and tried to escape. Karygmax fires a Dispersatron but missed, only disintegrating her right arm. Sersi fell though a well and into the ocean, eventually finding her way to Washington and Kro. She regenerates her arm and explains that she needs reinforcements and her own people consider her mad, victim of Mahd W’yry. So Kro consults the Delta network to recruit Deviant heroes….

Delta Force arrives in Lemuria. Kro dispatches Karkas, Ransak, Enigmo, and Toro to rescue the Avengers who have been sent to the arena while Kro, Sersi, Dragona, and Tzabaoth head to the sacrificial altar where they find the captives suspended in the air in an “unholy pentagram.” Cap reveals that Sersi was allowed to escape so that she would bring the Delta members back. And the blood from her severed arm was enough to use in the spell that resurrected Lord Ghaur….

Avengers, The (1963 series) #370 Review by (November 1, 2025)
Comments: Part one of two parts. First appearance of Delta Force. The West Coast Avengers are mentioned as having disbanded. The placement of Lemuria as near South America conflicts with its usual position being given as near Australia. Karygmax was introduced in ETERNALS (1985) #1 and appeared in issue #9 of that series; this two-part tale marks his final appearances. Dragona first appeared in THOR #286; this two-parter is her final appearance. First appearance of Enigmo. Deborah and Donald Ritter were introduced in ETERNALS: THE HEROD FACTOR; this is the first appearance of their gestalt Tzabaoth; they later appear as Dark Angel in HEROES FOR HIRE #6. Toro Rojo first appeared in THOR #290; this two-parter is his final appearance. Lord Ghaur was killed in FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #22. Finished art by Al Milgrom and Tom Yates.

Review: So the Avengers swing into action, are immediately captured, then we spend the rest of the issue recruiting a new team of very obscure heroes, they swing into action and are immediately captured too, then we have a villain reveal. And the crazy thing? This is a two-part story so these new heroes vanish forever (mostly) after next issue. So it looks like a lot of build-up and for what? We’ll see. Meanwhile, the issue is rather good in spite of its awkward make-up of multiple intros.
