Synopsis

All-New Hawkeye Vol.2 #5 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
This issue again opens with a flashback to Kate Bishop's youth.

Last night she secretly saw her revered father beating a bound man and demanding what he was owed. Now at breakfast he finally has time to talk to her. He tells her they have something to talk about, and she thinks he knows what she saw. But instead he tells her that he and her mother have split up. (Mom's not really been around for a while whenever Kate was home from boarding school, and her thoughts tell us that she figured out they were separated a year ago.) She says she doesn't blame him and he assures her that it's not at all her fault. Then his aide Mr Krip reminds him he has a meeting about last night's business. Derek Bishop leaves his daughter to attend her private ballet class, but she's determined to find out what's going. So she hides in the boot of the car when dad and Mr Krip drive to the meeting. She tells herself that her father might be in some sort of trouble and she can help him.

In the present-day Hawkeye (Clint Barton) has been shot (in a bulletproof vest) while trying to stop a Hydra truck believed to contain the 3 Project Communion kids kidnapped from SHIELD last issue. 2 SHIELD Agents with him get out of the smaller Hydra truck the 3 of them took over then. He tells them they should have continued chasing the big truck rather than stopping to help him. And he takes things into his own hands by firing arrows which burst the fleeing truck's tires. But it tips over while turning a corner and explodes. Behind them we see a Hydra trooper getting into the smaller truck. SHIELD Director Maria Hill calls down from a helicarrier where they've detected the explosion and wants to know what's going on. Clint removes his hearing aid and throws it away.

In the past young Kate is spying on a meeting between Mr Bishop and the criminal Matador. The man he beat up last issue worked for the villain. Bishop had hired them to 'persuade' tenants to leave a property so his company could redevelop the building. Matador hasn't fulfilled his side of the bargain and so he wants his money back. He's thinking of hiring Shocker to do the job. Matador is offended and promises to complete the deal by the end of the week. Bishop accepts this but threatens reprisals if he fails again. He then leaves. Kate tries to follow but is caught by 1 of Matador's minions.

In the present Maria Hill has come down to find out personally what's happened. Clint claims his lost hearing aid means he can't hear her, but she reminds him she knows he can lip-read. And she also gives him a replacement hearing aid. Barton sticks to his story that he tried to stop the truck but screwed things up by causing the crash and massive explosion. Hill says her people can't find anything in the wreck but nobody could have survived it. But she accuses him of not telling her *everything*, which he denies. However he claims that it may be the best result because now SHIELD and Hydra can stop fighting over the kids. She confirms that her report will say that and Project Communion will be shut down. Hawkeye is willing to suffer any repercussions from the debacle.

While this conversation was going on we've seen the 2 Hydra Agents (1 male, 1 female) escaping in the smaller truck to an airplane. Then they unmask as Barney Barton and Kate Bishop. And the Communion 3 are in the back of the truck. Now Clint arrives on a motorbike. He tells them that Maria Hill will go along with their story. She knows that it's not true but, as in the previous series, she's sympathetic to their cause. Now the kids will go home.

On the last page past-Kate is brought before Matador. They search her backpack and  learn who she is from her diary. And the villain has an idea.
