Story Name:

The Kangaroo Bounces Back!

Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #126 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

On his way to ESU, Spider-Man is flagged down by two advertising executives named Carter and Lombardo. The two represent Corona Motors and want Spider-Man to build a Spider-Mobile with a Corona engine to help advertise the company! Spider-Man points out that he’s currently wanted by the police, which wouldn’t be good P.R., as well as thinking the whole idea is stupid. As Spider-Man swings off, he’s watched from the shadows by the Kangaroo, who blames Spider-Man for the way his life has gone. The Kangaroo is then approached by Jonas Harrow, who has a proposition for him! Peter arrives at ESU, where he’s approached by Professor Warren about actually attending his class again sometime. Just after, Mary Jane and Flash approach Peter, inviting him to grab a coke with them but he rudely declines, still not feeling in the mood for anything. Hours later, Peter swings back to his apartment to find an eviction warning there, as the rent hasn’t been paid in two months. Peter then receives a call from Aunt May, having heard from Mary Jane about Peter’s off mood. Peter assures her everything is fine, telling her she doesn’t need to travel to come see him.

Meanwhile, Jonas Harrow takes the Kangaroo to his lab, where he preps him for a special surgery. He puts the Kangaroo under and works for hours, outfitting him with metallic enhancements in his arms and legs to increase his abilities. Once the process is complete, the Kangaroo finds that he’s stronger than he’s ever been, and able to leap countless times farther! Harrow then tries to tell the Kangaroo about his plan, but the Kangaroo doesn’t care, swatting Harrow away. The next day, Spider-Man heads back to the offices of Carter and Lombardo, to see if their offer is still on the table. Needing the money for rent, Spidey agrees to build the Spider-Mobile for $1,000 up front in cash. As he swings away, Spidey is attacked by the newly-powered Kangaroo. The Kangaroo surprises Spidey with his increased power, until he starts to feel an intense pain in his head, and a voice whispering for him to go somewhere specific. He jumps off, and Spidey resumes where he had been heading. Not knowing too much about cars, he heads to the Baxter Building in order to enlist the Human Torch’s help in building his Spider-Mobile.

Elsewhere, John Jameson remains in the hospital after his recent troubles as the Man-Wolf. His father J. Jonah Jameson demands that they do everything they can for him while promising to bring Spider-Man, the one he deems responsible, to justice! The Kangaroo is compelled to return to Jonas Harrow’s lair, where Harrow reveals he implanted something in his head as an insurance policy. He then has the Kangaroo head to a special lab to steal a radioactive isotope for him. While working with the Torch, Spidey hears about the Kangaroo’s attempted theft and heads out to tackle him alone. Spider-Man arrives at the lab to face off with the Kangaroo once more! After fighting for a bit, Spidey realizes that the room the Kanagroo is attempting to get into is heavily irradiated and will kill him if he tries to go in! The Kangaroo thinks Spidey is just trying to trick him, especially when the police arrive outside with warnings to send in tear gas. Against Spidey’s warnings, the Kangaroo enters the room and immediately succumbs to the heavy radiation, dying instantly! Spidey seals up the door again and slips past the entering police, as Harrow watches from the crowd, disappointed that the Kanagroo failed, but determined to try again with someone else!

In an epilogue, Mary Jane tries to get Harry to come out with her, having seen him go in his apartment. Harry ignores her until she gets fed up and leaves, not wanting her to see him with the Green Goblin’s costume! Turns out Harry was the one who removed the Goblin costume from his father, beginning him on the slippery path to become the new Goblin himself! All this, while Spider-Man swings around, too depressed about Gwen to care much about anything.

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #126 Review by (March 4, 2026)

Review: There’s a lot going on this issue, and most of it not necessarily the most fondly remembered Spider-Man stuff. First off, we have the (very brief) return of the Kangaroo, everyone’s favorite Spidey villain! He’s enhanced by Jonas Harrow (the guy responsible for Hammerhead) and sent to steal a radioactive isotope. The Kangaroo’s stupidity ends up being his undoing when he dies instantly from entering the heavily irradiated room the isotope is being kept in, against Spidey’s warnings! This might be one of the first times that someone’s actually died from radiation in Marvel, instead of just getting superpowers! He was no one’s favorite villain, but it was still a very abrupt and rough way to go, especially as just the expendable pawn of someone else. He’s for real dead too, only returning in stories set around this time, or those pesky clone situations (and he’s a joke those times as well). This is far from the last time that Jonas Harrow will use other, minor villains for his schemes either.

The other major part of the issue involves the first whisperings of the Spider-Mobile, when Spidey is approached to help advertise a new motor. It’ll be a bit before the car is actually built but really batting 0 for 2 on the major plots this issue huh? Arguably Spidey’s worst villain up to this point returning only to die being an idiot, and then the start of the Spider-Mobile, one of the goofiest and least necessary aspects of Spidey history! Spidey himself even thinks the idea is dumb and only agrees cause he might get evicted otherwise! A lot of the other subplots just kind of spin their wheels, and everyone is still kind of miserable. We do finally discover that Harry is the one who removed the Green Goblin costume from his father, starting him on the path to become the new Green Goblin not too long from now. It’s probably not a great sign when the only really significant part of an issue happens in the epilogue. Overall, not Conway’s best issue with some less than stellar main plots. Weirdest moment: after agreeing to build the car, Spidey mentions not being good at practical engineering. I know it’s not the same as an entire car, but this is still the same guy who built functional web-shooters when he was 15! Give yourself some credit, Pete!

Comments: Death of the Kangaroo. At one point, Spider-Man makes a joke about Andy Granitelli, former CEO of STP, a motor oil company, and a prominent figure in racing events.
