Reed Richards deduces the truth and leads the team to confront their alien doubles.

Review / Commentaries

Fantastic Four (1961 series) #2 Review by (August 12, 2025)

Fantastic Four #2 is a bold leap into Cold War paranoia, wrapped in cosmic adventure. The Skrulls—deceptive, infiltrating aliens—mirror 1962’s anxieties about hidden enemies and ideological subversion. Yet beneath the sci-fi spectacle lies a story of trust and resilience.

Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben aren’t just superheroes—they’re a family, navigating betrayal and public scorn with unwavering loyalty. The hypnotized Skrulls-as-cows twist adds a surreal, satirical edge, showcasing Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s flair for mixing absurdity with allegory.

It’s a tale of heroism under pressure, where unity triumphs over fear—and imagination reigns supreme.

My Rating: 4.5

Here’s why:

  • Cultural resonance: The Skrull storyline taps directly into Cold War fears of infiltration and identity theft, making it more than just escapist fiction—it’s allegorical.
  • Character dynamics: The Fantastic Four’s interpersonal chemistry is already strong here, with teamwork and emotional stakes driving the plot.
  • Inventiveness: Hypnotizing aliens into believing they’re cows? That’s peak 1960s Marvel—bold, bizarre, and unforgettable.
  • Pacing and structure: The chaptered format adds cinematic rhythm, rare for comics of the time.
  • Legacy impact: It introduces the Skrulls, who become central villains in Marvel lore.

It’s not flawless—some dialogue and logic feel dated—but for its time, it’s a masterstroke of genre-defining storytelling.
