Hulk: Destruction #1 Review by (October 18, 2022)

Review: An alternate history of the Abomination, if such a thing were needed, is best written by Peter David. The art is hard to look at, with bulging bodies and popping arteries, making everyone look grotesque and it’s all garishly colored too. We’ll have to see where the story goes.

Comments: The Marvel Database states that this miniseries is set in Earth-591. Hulk appears only in flashback. There is a joke reference to the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds by Paul Zindel. Saddam Hussein had already been in custody since December 13, 2003; the picture of the Abomination capturing him was an artist‘s interpretation. General Ross refers to TV mentalist the Amazing Kreskin.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hulk: Destruction #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The US Department of Defense is considering using Emil Blonsky, the Abomination, as a combat asset, imagining him capturing Saddam Hussein and carrying out other risky missions. Several military types are consulted on the matter. General Thunderbolt Ross is strongly against the idea, calling Blonsky a monster. The Secretary of Defense points out that Ross is the one who hired Blonsky for an administrative position in the division and may be resentful that Blonsky eventually outranked him. The Secretary then brings up Doc Samson….

Years ago Samson was captured by a team led by Mercy (Abigail Wright) under orders from Blonsky accusing Samson of aiding Bruce Banner. Samson will be held until he tells everything he knows about the Hulk; Samson accuses Blonsky of wanting the Hulk’s power for himself. A report comes that the Hulk is rampaging downtown. Blonsky dispatches the military to fight him; Doc Samson escapes custody to try to talk Hulk into surrendering peacefully….

In the present, Ross meets Samson, telling him he is needed to do a psychiatric evaluation of a subject…and then he is taken in to see the captive Abomination….
