Synopsis

New Mutants (2009 series) #32 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

In Helheim, the Place of Hela, the New Mutants (Mirage, Sunspot, Magma, Cypher, X-Man, Warlock) gather around the corpse of Hela, Norse Goddess of Death, preparing for the attack by the enemy Draumir. Cypher warns Magma of the coming storm, still feeling guilty over accidentally sending them to Hell (issue #29), forcing Magma to agree to a date with Mephisto. X-Man confides to Sunspot that his powers are gone and he has no business being with the team; Sunspot advises him to focus his power—but then Warlock grabs them, telling them to get down. And the Draumir enter the place and the battle begins….

Meanwhile, Dani “Mirage” Moonstar is sitting with Hela’s body, worried about what is next. Then Kaw the raven swoops down—and enters Hela’s mouth, causing her to awaken. She reveals that when she was attacked she knew she couldn’t win a straight battle so she put her soul into the raven and sent it to Dani, giving her time to work out a strategy. But she still has not idea how to defeat the enemy…but she can slow them down….

The New Mutants receive a power upgrade from Hela and take the fight to the Draumir. They note that the invaders are afraid of Warlock, as he represents a reality completely alien to them. X-Man asks Hela to make his life flash before their eyes. And so, seeing everything X-Man has ever experienced fills them with such a fear of the unknown that they fade away into nothing. The battle over, Hela sends them back to Utopia where Magik greets them with, “How was Hell?”

Review / Commentaries

New Mutants (2009 series) #32 Review by (April 22, 2025)

Review: Ah, the big finish! And, as comic books do best, they work out an imaginary solution to an imaginary problem, cleverly scaring the monsters by boggling their minds with more comic book stuff. It’s audacious and it works. That’s the magic of comics!

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part four of four parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #5 and 6. Warlock’s bloodthirsty battle cry comes from CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982). And Magma has her date with Mephisto in issue #37. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Robbi Rodriguez contributed to the art and Sotocolor did some of the coloring.
