Synopsis

Secret Avengers (2014 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

On the SHIELD Helicarrier Iliad, Director Maria Hill has an assignment for Agents Nick Fury Jr. and Phil Coulson, to be handled before they have officially joined the Secret Avengers. They go to the secret space station Misericordia and fight a gruesome cybiote monster called The Fury, which has already slaughtered the station’s crew….

Meanwhile, Natasha “Black Widow” Romanova and Jessica “Spider-Woman” Drew are relaxing at the Russian baths in New York, enjoying massages before Nat shows Jess the special room, full of various weapons so they can get insome creative target practice….

Nearby, Hawkeye is being pursued over rooftops by A.I.M. goons….

Maria Hill is called to the secret lab of M.O.D.O.K. where she bickers with the monster scientist over poetry while he has excuses for why his projects are taking so long. He shows her the Nanobot Blanket, which is a flexible killing device that disperses after use, never to be found. Hill gets through to Fury and Coulson, demanding reinforcements to fight The Fury. At a disadvantage, Coulson sets his gun for maximum charge while N. Fury warns him not to do that in a space station….

On the Iliad, a new agent arrives and is directed to Hernandez….

Hawkeye climbs through a window to escape the A.I.M. goons and finds himself with bulky Russian men in a sauna so he asks for a locker. Minutes later, a naked Clint encounters Natasha and Jessica, both of whom can count him as an ex. The goons smash through the skylight to surround them….

The new agent kills Hernandez and Harris as he is an assassin sent to kill Maria Hill and he has her locked in M.O.D.O.K.’S lab….

Nat, Jessica, and Clint, in a minimum of clothing, fight their way through the A.I.M. goons and jump in the SHIELD convertible and take off. Hill contacts them to tell them to get to Fury and Coulson ASAP picking up the special suits on the way. At this point, Hill mentions the guys are in space…

…where they have been sucked out into space, thanks to Coulson’s foolish shot. Then the hitman enters the lab and shoots Hill through her right hand, Fury and Coulson fall toward the Earth, and the suitably space suited trio of agents flies up to the rescue….

Secret Avengers (2014 series) #1 Review by (October 7, 2026)

Review: And now we begin a new volume of SECRET AVENGERS, hot on the heels of the last one, with Ales Kot taking over as sole writer and the accent is even more on comedy as the heroes’ predicaments grow increasingly absurd, their reactions jaundiced and ironic, with suitable cartoonish covers by Tradd Moore. I loved the heroic first volume, only liked the darker more cynical second and here I am having a good time with the third.

So Maria Hill is still in charge, Fury, Coulson, and Black Widow (and Hawkeye with issue #3) on the team. We’ve added Spider-Woman, an offbeat choice as she is not usually one of the spy characters. And M.O.D.O.K. is SHIELD’s new secret scientist, his every encounter with Maria Hill a verbal duel, trying to draw blood. And the entire operation looks like it will fall to pieces any second.

I hope I’ve accurately rendered that by mimicking the fast-paced patchwork nature of the plot in my synopsis. And I hope the crazy comic level is maintained through the rest of the series.

Comments: “All-New Marvel Now!”—Cover. The Fury is a cybiote killer from Earth-238, appearing first in Marvel UK titles; his first American appearances were in UNCANNY X-MEN #462 and X-MEN: DIE BY THE SWORD #1-5. First appearance of Snapper (Broseph Simpkins the Seventh), though he says nothing.

MODOK quotes from two poems titled, “Ozymandias,” one by Percy Shelley, the other by Horace Smith, both on the transitory nature of all human power and glory.

Issue includes an essay by writer Ales Kot on his plans for the series.
