The Destroyer, wielding Mjolnir, stands over the defeated Thor, Tarene watching helplessly as the armor inflicts blow upon blow on the Thunder God. Separated from the hammer for more than sixty seconds, Thor transforms back into the mortal Jake Olson who walks away, seeking a way to end the monster’s rampage. He appeals to Tarene to try to restrain the armor but he just gets clobbered for his trouble. Amora the Enchantress, watching from her luxury apartment, decides she must intervene….

Odin decides that, despite Watcher’s warnings, he must go to the Odinson’s aid. Karnilla, watching from afar, is concerned that the All-Father will aid Thor; Loki replies that Odin can’t do that if he arrives too late. Odin opens a vortex to Midgard but his way is blocked by a giant monster called a Jutefiosk….

Amora, in her astral form, approaches the Destroyer and can sense Tarene’s life force animating it but also Karnilla’s and Loki’s influence behind it. Jake drives a car straight at the huge armored enemy, leaping out at the last moment; it does nothing to halt the Destroyer. Amora traces Tarene’s aura to locate her physical body in the possession of Loki and Karnilla; she takes Tarene’s hammer. On Midgard, Destroyer swats Jake with a car door, laying him out as Sif again attacks the armor. Amora presents Jake with Tarene’s hammer, reminding him she truly loves him and only wants his well-being. Jake raps the hammer on the ground…and nothing happens. Odin, carrying a dead monster, appears before him, explains why the thing didn’t work with the different hammer, and transforms Jake into Thor. Thor, wielding Tarene’s hammer, takes on the Destroyer using Mjolnir and the Earth shakes. Tarene exerts enough of her power to allow Thor to snatch his own hammer back from the foe. Odin sends Tarene’s life force back into her body where she intends to punish Loki and Karnilla….

Back in Midgard, Odin decides that Thor has learned the lesson of leadership and permits him to retain his powers. The Watcher suddenly appears and confirms that the future tragedy is now unavoidable….

The cultists in Norway chant as Surtur arrives on Earth once more….

Thor (1998 series) #38 Review by (December 23, 2025)

Review: An unusual cover heralds the conclusion to the three-part Destroyer tale with its concentrated violence. Amora is actually helpful, even in astral form, and now that Thor knows she’s plotting something, she may not be able to get away with it. The oddest part is that Jake Olson can take blows from the Destroyer. We were not given to understand that Jake was any stronger than an ordinary mortal, maybe a little less as he is only a cheap construct of a human. Anyway, nice conclusion though all it really took was Odin giving orders so maybe padding this out to three issues was unnecessary.

Comments: Part three of three parts. Letters by Oscar Gongora, Comicraft, and Richard Starkings.
