With Great Power

Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #51 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Asgard has materialized over New York City. In a panic, the USA has dispatched stealth bombers to investigate. And so Spider-Man clings underneath a bomber, hitching a ride to see the phenomenon. Heimdall fires an arrow and as Spidey drops off, the arrow passes him and strikes the bomber, causing it to explode, the pilot parachuting to safety. Spidey, however, crashes through a roof and into a pub. The denizens are confused as to whether Spidey is a bug, a gnome, an elf, or a goblin, the last of which offends the hero. He leaps up through the hole in the ceiling and away, dodging a hail of missile weapons….

At the United Nations Building, delegates are worried that the Americans will overreact to the shooting down of their plane while around the world, drought-stricken areas have rain, volcanoes are going dormant and more. Then Thialfi crashes through the window on a winged horse; learning that the Secretary General was whisked away to safety, he takes a random man, Telleckson, away with him. Assuming New York is doomed, other delegates take swift action to protect Beijing….

On Asgard, the mob is still pursing Spidey; the blacksmith has not seen him so they search the barn. Spidey is hanging from the ceiling. They spy him so he webs them to the wall and departs. Finally Spidey realizes he is in Asgard so he heads to the palace to get Odin to move the city away….

Telleckson is skeptical about Asgard and gods and considers all the trouble to be Asgard’s fault. And then he comes face-to-face with Thor who explains that centuries ago, man looked to the gods for guidance. As the human race progressed, the gods stepped back to allow humanity to find enlightenment on their own. Burt now that was seen to be a mistake so Asgard will resume control to halt the decline of humanity into immortality. He explains his plan to fix global warming, feed the hungry, overthrow despots, and other boons to the world. Telleckson refuses his help. Thor bursts into a rage so Spider-Man jumps out from where he has been listening to stop harm coming to Telleckson, explaining that he can’t change the rules of Midgard without being asked. Thor explains this is but an extension of what he has been doing with the Avengers. When Spidey tells him he can’t interfere with people’s lives, Thor points out that Spider-Man ignores his critics. And as Thor has the power he also has the responsibility, words familiar to Spidey. Then Heimdall sounds his horn giving warning. Thor flies out to discover that the USA has launched two nukes at Asgard. As Spider-Man watches in astonishment, Thor contains the explosion within the Odinforce and creates a vortex around it, sending it where it can do no harm. Thor transports Spidey and Telleckson back to Earth with orders to spread the word that the gods seek only to help and enlighten. Spidey ponders Thor claim that if he had their power Spider-Man would do the same thing….

Thor (1998 series) #51 Review by (April 21, 2026)

Review: And now it begins…the Reigning, which various future characters have agonized over and warned about. We get to see it through the eyes of Spider-Man along with the rest of the world as he invades Asgard to see what is going on. We are privileged to hear the rationale for this move from the mouth of Thor himself in his majesty; Spidey, for all his brains, hasn’t thought through the issues involved and so his rejoinders fall flat. It’s a nice issue that lays out the story beats to come, sort of a precursor to ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM, only with a good guy in charge. And Thor gets to stop a nuclear holocaust, which impresses even Spider-Man who recognizes that he could never have handled an exploit of that magnitude. So Thor even impresses Spider-Man enough to shake his world.

Best Spidey Moment: The web-slinger bristles at being called a goblin.

Best Art Moment: Spidey jumping from panel to panel of a panorama of Asgard. Hard to explain but it is impressive.

Comments: Cover is a homage to MARVELS #4. Spidey calls the Air Force pilot, “Mr. Canyon,” a nod to the classic comic strip STEVE CANYON (1947-1988), featuring an Air Force pilot.
