Thor Annual (1966 series) #13

Mephisto, bored with the usual scene in Hell, decides to pick on Thor in the wake of the death of Odin. He chooses Ulik as his weapon and approaches the troll in his kingdom. The monster refuses to do another’s bidding so Mephisto kidnaps Ulik’s brother Horth to compel his cooperation…..

Above ground, a melancholy Thor seeks solace in the woods. He directs a family of refugees on the path to safety over the hills. Suddenly, Ulik arrives in his drill-car and challenges Thor. The two engage in a brutal battle which the Thunder God wins. Ulik explains the situation and Thor, who can’t turn away from anyone who needs his aid, vows to face Mephisto…

…who immediately transports the hero to Hell. Thor demands the release of Horth but it turns out the troll has been dead since before Ulik encountered the hero. Mephisto conjures up (an illusion of) the spirit of Odin which Thor saves from attack by a harpy. Thor bursts a thorny vine enwrapping him and shouts defiance at his infernal foe. The villain reveals that Thor’s battle with Ulik caused an avalanche which buried the refugee family. Thor calls down a rainstorm in Hell. Mephisto is bored with his game and sends Thor back to the surface to discover that the villain told the truth, the refugees are all dead. Thor vows to continue his fight against evil but Mephisto just laughs.
