Mephisto, bored with the usual scene in Hell, decides to pick on Thor in the wake of the death of Odin. He chooses Ulik as his weapon and approaches the troll in his kingdom. The monster refuses to do another’s bidding so Mephisto kidnaps Ulik’s brother Horth to compel his cooperation…..

…who immediately transports the hero to Hell. Thor demands the release of Horth but it turns out the troll has been dead since before Ulik encountered the hero. Mephisto conjures up (an illusion of) the spirit of Odin which Thor saves from attack by a harpy. Thor bursts a thorny vine enwrapping him and shouts defiance at his infernal foe. The villain reveals that Thor’s battle with Ulik caused an avalanche which buried the refugee family. Thor calls down a rainstorm in Hell. Mephisto is bored with his game and sends Thor back to the surface to discover that the villain told the truth, the refugees are all dead. Thor vows to continue his fight against evil but Mephisto just laughs.

Thor Annual (1966 series) #13 Review by (February 17, 2014)
Review: There really isn’t much to this story which has been laid out to fill an entire double-sized issue. The impotence of good against evil is a bit surprising for a mainstream comic of the period, providing a bit more realism to this apparently escapist fare. The best part of the issue is that it provides the great John Buscema a real showcase for his art in drawing the epic battle scenes with several large panels to each page. So three stars for the story and five for the art, which averages out to four.

Comments: Story takes place after the fall of Odin in THOR #353-354. Next annual: 1989.
