Incredible Hulk #4 Review by (September 13, 2023)

Review: A guest artist gives this issue a fresh look (and we’re only on issue #4) with his slightly cartoonier style, providing a knockout story. There’s still a cool battle with Hulk tearing himself out of Man-Thing though the intense green and orange scheme is a bit over the top. Still, we have the Bruce/Charlie dynamic at the center though we’ll have to wait to see what’s really going on.

Comments: Charlie’s full name is given for the first time: Charlene Tidwell. Wolverine and Cyclops are seen in a TV news program.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Incredible Hulk #4 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On a rainy night in Florida, a middle-aged man named Juke is on his way home from the bar when he sees the figure of Ash, his girlfriend who died in an auto accident when they were teenagers. She lures him out into the water and he is seized from below….

Bruce Banner and Charlie arrive at a small town in Florida on a rainy day. They visit a diner where Bruce calls her on her recently adopted angry rebel act, accusing her of putting it on so the Hulk will like her better. He warns her that hanging out with him will never give her Hulk powers and also that he’s being pursued by something called the Eldest which puts her life in danger. She doesn’t need him to live her life. Bruce goes to the counter to order and a news report comes on the television that she is being sought by police for questioning about her father’s gruesome death. She goes to the counter and is told Banner left. She runs out into the rain where she sees her dead brother Earl in a pond, calling to her and asking to be held….

And Bruce encounters the Man-Thing, guardian of the Nexus. Man-Thing seizes him, severely burning Bruce because “whatever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing’s touch.” Bruce is absorbed into the monster and Hulk bursts out, tearing Man-Thing apart. But inside the monster is Ted Sallis, a scientist Bruce once knew, telling him he is in the Nexus which is threatened by the Eldest and he needs help….

Charlie runs out into the pond where she is seized by a gigantic monster with tentacles that resemble humans….
