Synopsis

Wolverine/Hulk (2002 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

A little girl named Po, who will center in this story, introduces herself and her father, describing an airplane flight that never reaches its destination….

Wolverine, flying a plane over the Rocky Mountains, crashes in a snowy wilderness. Po runs to him, asking if she can help her father who is trapped underwater in their plane. As the little girl wavers between a semi-realistic art and a child’s drawing, popping in and out of sight, Logan is certain she’s a hallucination caused by his suffering. Concerned about a search party missing him if he goes with the girl, Logan is persuaded by Po, who tells him her uncle is nearby. She explains that their plane crashed in a lake, she pulled the green strap and escaped but didn’t pull Daddy’s red strap so he could escape and now he’s trapped underwater. Logan carries her through the snow, calming her fears that she is responsible for her Daddy’s predicament. They come to a hole in the ground and she pushes him in, popping down with him. They walk through an ice cave and find Po’s Uncle Bruce—and it’s the Hulk. At Po’s urging, Logan tries to explain the situation to Hulk, who responds by punching Logan’s face. He prepares to fight back but Po slaps him to stop him from using his claws, reminding Logan that they need Hulk to calm down so Uncle Bruce can tell them what to do. Hulk, who doesn’t see or hear Po, grows cranky and drops a boulder on Logan, following up with a series of punches. Logan begs the girl to find a way to calm Hulk so she offers a sparkler. It doesn’t work. Hulk hits Logan again…and again….

Wolverine/Hulk (2002 series) #1 Review by (May 20, 2026)

Review: My, this is an odd-looking comic. And Sam Kieth’s art style is what jumps out immediately, an impressionistic and often twisted portrayal of the people and events. Hulk and Logan look like apes with their jutting jaws and angry postures. Meanwhile, the little girl constantly fluctuates between a child’s drawing and the “real” style of the main story. It takes a while getting used to, especially as we can’t always tell what in the story is “real” or not. The art is accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek narration that matches the art, signaling that this story is not a serious one—and it isn’t. This makes for a tricky balance between the comical art and the main story which, after all, centers on a small child who doesn’t know she is dead and is pleading with the two heroes to rescue her long dead father. But the kid gets into the swing of things as she also plays a comical role in the proceedings, nagging and manipulating the heroes into their mission. Meanwhile, Hulk and Logan, longtime enemies, fight often throughout the epic, Hulk being a bit stupider than usual, as Logan contributes wry commentary with a fatalistic tone. On rereading, I realized that Kieth’s writing was better than it seemed at first, not just being ugly for its own sake but having a certain fascinating charm of its own. Plus his ability to wring ironic humor out of a dark situation is not to be overlooked. So…pretty cool.
