Synopsis

X-Vengers (2025 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

In 1 particular future an X-virus has mutated many baseline humans and killed many more. Among the changed are some ex-Avengers who now gather for the inauguration of the Steve Rogers Memorial in Seattle, Washington State. Natasha Romanoff is now blue, Shang-Chi is grey, Clint Barton has 6 arms and Scott Lang is hunchbacked, but Dani Moonstar, Sam Guthrie and Vision don't appear different because they were already mutants or a synthezoid. The memorial includes as well as a statue of Captain America an inscription listing the many Avengers, family and friends who've died by the virus. Clint notes that Kate Bishop and many of his neighbours are there who helped him fight the Tracksuit Mafia (in his 2012 Hawkeye series). Scott sees his daughter Cassie's name along with Janet Van Dyne. Vision consoles him that many afterlife planes have proven to exist so she's probably watching him from 1 of them.

The touching scene is interrupted by protesting humans who name them X-Vengers and believe that the virus means that they must be on the side of the mutant dictator Revelation. They are afraid because the virus is still spreading out of the area controlled by Revelation. And they don't believe Vision when he says *they* can't stop the epidemic, only the combined efforts of the world's scientists can do that. Their leader Moonstar has Cap's shield and she draws attention by letting it ring on the stone floor. A man protests that she has no right to carry it but she says that Cap gave it to her as he lay dying in Washington (the city) and she promised to uphold his dream until she dies. They may be mutants (now) but they're still Avengers and they'll protect *anyone* from threats.

Then Vision detects aner invasion from space and we see that's it's Kree led by Lord Yon the Accuser here to take the planet for the Empire while it's heroes are dead or broken. The team apart from Lang suit up and fly by Quinjet to the attack site which turns out to be in Philadelphia in the Revelation Territories. Invulnerable Cannonball and Vision fly solo to punch through Kree spaceships. Lord Yon sends fighter planes against them. On the ground Scott Lang as Variable Man has grown building-size to smash ground forces. His mutation hasn't removed his ability to shrink or grow but the result still has an outsize torso plus invulnerability.

Pilot Hawkeye drops off the other 3 to invade the Kree command ship. Moonstar hurls Cap's shield with a psionic boost to take  down several troopers on its way back to her. Black Widow has been turned into water but has learned to mould her substance into a humanoid form but infiltrate by flowing when necessary like now. Shang-Chi now has to control all his actions to avoid shattering things like glass, except when *that*'s useful like now.

Outside we rejoin Vision and learn that he was 'consumed' by a Technarch overgrowth in the Territories. He survived but his daughter Viv didn't. And he's telepathically connected to all of the Technarchy on Earth which fills his head with noise, like now. Meanwhile Hawkeye has put the Quinjet on autopilot and is ready to join the battle. With his 6 arms he wields 2 bows and the other 2 arms can select arrows. Also 2 of the arms are part cyborg. He fires a size-change arrow to shrink 1 spaceship, and then explosive arrows to take out 2 more.

Water Widow and Dani Moonstar have made it to the bridge to confront Yon. But then he seems to get a holographic message from the Kree Supreme Intelligence saying he's failing in his task ... and then preparing to eat him. But it's actually 1 of Dani's mirages allowing her to KO him with the psionically-charged shield. Unfortunately the ship is crashing to Earth. Fortunately super-giant-size Variable Man catches it, with a bit of help from Cannonball.

Later the team are cleaning up the mess, watched by Revelation (Doug Ramsey) himself (I think). Sunspot, Boom-Boom, Rockslide, Thunderbird and Random come from rounding up stray Kree. Bobby Da Costa repeats an offer for Sam Guthrie to join Revelation's Seraphim but he says he's staying with the Avengers. Suddenly Scott Lang and 6 mutant civilians are engulfed by a Technarch variant. Vision warns everyone not to touch it while he blasts it from the jewel on his forehead. Hawkeye fires an arrow that freezes it but that doesn't stop it from killing Scott, who's glad to be going to join Cass.

X-Vengers (2025 series) #1 Review by (November 1, 2025)
This mini-series is part of the alternate future Age Of Revelation event.

All the X-Vengers have been belonged to 1 or more Avengers teams. Clint Barton, Natasha Romanoff and Vision have been in several Avengers teams each and more issues than anyone can count. Sam Guthrie was in Avengers from 2013 and New/US Avengers later. Scott Lang joined the main team in 2003 for a while. Shang-Chi was in the Secret Avengers from 2010, the main team from 2013 and the Emergency Response Squad in 2024. Even Dani Moonstar was part of the Avengers Initiative in 2007.

Information about the future history of the team members is given in a voiceover by Dani Moonstar.

We learn that Sam Wilson (Captain America) is President. And we see that Guthrie and Moonstar wear Avengers jackets from the 1992-1994 period, when they *weren't* on the team.

The Technarchy are alien AI techno-organic metamorphs which we 1st met in New Mutants #18. Their most famous member is Warlock who joined the NM in #21. He was able to merge with Doug Ramsey (Cypher), who is now Revelation. They had a complicated existence including death and complete merging but were separate beings in the Krakoan Age. Cypher became Revelation as the Heir Of Apocalypse in the mini-series of that name, and the pair have been together since in X-Men (2024) #19 & 22.
