Synopsis

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #104 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

At the end of last issue, Spider-Man found himself caught in quicksand! Spidey tries webbing himself to branch to pull himself out, only to have the branch snap off! Not only that, the falling branch manages to jam his web-shooter, leaving him to sink helplessly into the sand. Spidey’s then saved by the timely arrival of Ka-Zar and Zabu. Ka-Zar initially elects to go after Gog alone but Spidey insists they team up. Meanwhile, Kraven explains to the captive Gwen Stacy how he came to be here. Not long ago, he fought Ka-Zar (in Astonishing Tales #2) but after returning to his lair, quickly became bored. Kraven decided to take over the Savage Land for himself, wanting to prove himself mightier than Ka-Zar.

Kraven traveled back to the Savage Land and quickly came upon a mysterious crashed spaceship. He inspected the ship and discovered a small, recently born creature. Further inspection led him to find a deceased female of the same species, and he decided to take the lonely creature with him. He named the creature Gog and within days it grew and grew, until it towered over everything in its path. Kraven had Gog build the reptilian altar in order to enthrall the natives, leading him ever closer to ruling the Savage Land. Not far away, Spider-Man and Ka-Zar heard the whole thing and decide to spring their plan into action!

Spidey swings by Gog, making sure no one else sees him, in order to lure the gigantic creature away. With Kraven distracted by Gog’s seemingly random pursuit, Ka-Zar tackles him and the two begin a furious battle! Ka-Zar has the upper hand until Kraven zaps him with his vest lasers. Kraven has Ka-Zar at his mercy, and is about to kill him with a huge rock, when Zabu suddenly arrives to save his master. Ka-Zar pushes his advantage once more and Kraven feigns surrender in order to snag Ka-Zar with a rope around his neck! Ka-Zar strikes back but ends up sending Kraven toppling off a cliff to his apparent death!

Elsewhere, Gog continues to chase after Spider-Man, getting closer by the minute. Spidey then seemingly loses Gog, only to be attacked by a giant dinosaur! Gog fights the dinosaur while Spidey keeps out of the way and after an intense battle, Gog snaps the dinosaur’s neck! Gog then continues pursuing Spidey, who tricks him into walking right into the quicksand that trapped Spidey earlier. Gog quickly sinks completely into the quicksand, leaving Spidey to feel rather sick about his fate. Meanwhile, J. Jonah Jameson mourns the seemingly dead Peter and Gwen, when Ka-Zar returns Gwen to him. Jameson dejectedly tells Gwen what happened to Peter, when Peter suddenly appears, claiming to have been saved by some trees that broke his fall and knocked him unconscious. Peter and Gwen happily reunite, and they all set out to leave the Savage Land, each one feeling they experienced a tale they’ll never forget!

Amazing Spider-Man, The (1963 series) #104 Review by (October 1, 2025)

Review: Spidey’s adventure in the Savage Land concludes! This was an okay follow up that almost feels more like a Ka-Zar issue with Spidey guest starring in some places. Most of the action in the issue involves a big drag out fight between Ka-Zar and Kraven, in which Kraven apparently dies (which obviously more famously happens later). In fact, Kraven and Spidey never encounter each other in this whole story and Kraven never even learns Spidey was there! The reveal that Gog was an alien creature that crash landed in the Savage Land that Kraven just happened to find has always been kind of weird. Though Gog also seemingly dies, he’ll continue to show up over the years (not a lot, but more than you’d think). The art was just as over the top Gil Kane-y as last issue so at least it was kind of nice to look at, even if this two-parter made for an overall mediocre and questionable story. At least Jameson shows genuine sorrow and regret when he thinks Peter is dead, so that’s something.

Comments: Kraven mentions previously encountering Ka-Zar, which occurred in Astonishing Tales #2. The story is dedicated to Carl Denham, the fictional filmmaker who brought King Kong to the United States (played by Robert Armstrong in the 1933 classic and Jack Black in the 2005 remake).
